TEAM OF THE YEAR: Pope John played the toughest schedule in the state. It opened the season with five straight losses after playing Blair, Roselle Catholic, Covington Catholic (KY), Prestige Prep and St. Anthony. From there, the Lions found their form and used a nine-game winning streak between January and February to improve its record to 12-7. During the streak, Pope John picked up keywins over Paterson Kennedy, Chatham and Hun. Pope John was not able to repeat as Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament champs and fell to eventual champion Hunterdon Central, 73-69, in the semis. The Lions rebounded with four straight wins before losing to St. Peter's Prep in the North Jersey, Non-Public A quarterfinals, 73-64.

Junior point guard Aaron Clarke led Pope John with 21 points per game, while junior forward Samba Diallo handled the play in the paint and had 13.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore Jack Cavanaugh (8.9 ppg), senior Reuben Montilus (5.5 ppg) and senior Andy Ward (6.3 ppg) rounded out the key contributors for Pope John.

Very nice pickup. Sounds like he had a great summer and has a lot of potential. Also he's a lefty I believe, which makes him an instant favorite of mine. I would be happy with another wing joining him and/or a point guard. Great news, though. The recruiting guys who watched him this summer all seem to like him quite a bit...

Some interesting insight. Stuff we don't really notice that people in the know do. How important it is to sign a guy when everyone knows he is your top priority.

^ Love this part from the article mlaconte just posted: "He does need to rework his overall skillset but the NY Jayhawks star was the hardest playing competitor on the floor on Friday and really, it was not even close."

YES! YES! YES!

McCall's first future recruit and it's a good one.

No idea how Rivals has him ranked 126 and 247 has him ranked 428, makes no sense. But getting a top 150 recruit is a really good sign for our future recuriting. ESPN has him ranked as the 31st best SF, the 30th best committed to Indiana, so that shows a lot. Samba Diallo is a kid I really wanted him, had him in my personal top 3. HELL YEAHH!

His 247 ranking is not correct and will be adjusted. For now, you can essentially operate under the assumption that he just isn't ranked by 247, but he will be.

FWIW he is rated a 4 star 82 by ESPN. Personally I am not a fan of ESPN rankings but it's something to go off.

I saw a few interesting tweets about this commit as I'm sure many of you have. More than a couple mentioned that they thought he would be going to a "high major" program. One from a VCU fan expressed disbelief that they could lose a recruit to UMass. That one made me smile.

^ he had interest but opted for a chance at earlier PT over the highest league possible. Also have heard that he is pretty much the epitomy of a high character student athlete.

If Davis didn't leave VCU to come to UMass it's reasonable to think he would have gone to VCU instead of here. Rasheen was a very good hire.
