KAEO Brad Calipari (2016)

Post by NilesGold » Wed Sep 17, 2014 8:09 am

It's only interest at this point, but the name was notable enough so I figured i'd post it. Yes, he's coach John Calipari's son. It's possible that the interest is coming from UMass-Lowell and not UMass-Amherst, since he isn't exactly being recruited at a high level at this point as far as I can tell.

I'm guessing that it is us. To be determined whether Brad is a good enough player. His sister played on our women's team as a walk on.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

The tweet did a hashtag on A-10, so it's us, not UML.

I'd take the kid as a walk-on, would be the most interesting walk-on we've had in a long long time.

You have to take him as a walk-on if he wants to come. Just absolutely the right thing to do. I wouldn't even mind using a scholarship on him.
Looking forward to the 2022 UMass Football Season (Oh boy, just jinxed that one)

Saying you would use a scholarship on him at this point is simply crazy talk, imo.

I think you take any walk-on that can compete anywhere close to the D1 level as long as they aren't a detriment to team chemistry. But if his ability doesn't warrant a scholarship (not sure if it does or doesn't) why would you give him one?

Pretty easy to figure out why you'd want to keep the Calipari name alive at UMass. DK and Cal are close, but how many more recruits would Cal talk to on behalf of UMass/DK if his son was on the team? I'd say a strong chance that it would be more than he's currently sending this way (which is a good amount, by the way).

Is that just educated speculation or is that based on something we can substantiate?

I call bullshit on all of this. With the exception of possibly Malik Hines, I'm not convinced that Cal has effectively steered any players towards DK that ultimately came to UMass. And if he has, I find it unlikely that Cal would start sending more players to DK based on his son receiving a scholarship/attending UMass.

Haha welp, hate to break it to you, but you're dead wrong my friend. I doubt we spend a scholly on him if he's not worth it, but this was clearly what NJUmass was getting at a few posts up. If you think bringing him in as a walk-on wont help the program by even 1% then you simply just dont understand how big time college athletics works. Sign me up for Brad Cal. Lotta NCAA compliance nazi's out there on the internets so thats enough of this topic.

DK is almost certainly uncle Derek to Brad given that DK has known him his whole life. I'm sure DK would welcome him as a walk-on. A scholarship? Well, maybe Brad reminds him of an unwanted point guard from Springfield.

I'm pretty sure that Cal sent Big City to DK. He wasn't cutting it at Memphis but a change of scenery was supposed to help. Sadly, it didn't.

I never said Brad shouldn't be allowed to walk-on to UMass. I never said having him on the team wouldn't help the program. I disagreed that he should be given 1 of 13 scholarships just by virtue of his last name. I also find it very hard to believe your claims that Calipari is sending a "good amount" of players this way and furthermore that he'd send even more this way if his son were here. Feel free to PM me if you think the NCAA is going to investigate your assertions.

Given Dad's financial resources, methinks a scholly is not priority #1 in Brad's case.
