KAEO Jaylen Franklin (2016)
KAEO Jaylen Franklin (2016)
No scholarship offer yet, but interest. Apparently he took an unofficial visit and went to the game vs. Providence. I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like he's from Springfield, MA and went to East Longmeadow, but transferred this year to The Ross school out in Long Island. Having a pretty good year so far.

Correct, was at EL then went prep. Was the right decision, EL isn't very good and he's gotten much better at Ross.NilesGold wrote:No scholarship offer yet, but interest. Commits to UMass as a preferred walk-on Starting this fall.

Re: KAEO Jaylen Franklin (2016)
Preferred walk on seems about right. I guess this is what you do when you want to add a body but don't have any scholarships left. I saw him play against Hoosac (Unique McLean) and he looked decent. With Franklin and Miller we have 2 very capable practice players at guard who could play in a pinch.
Re: KAEO Jaylen Franklin (2016)
will someone please differentiate between a preferred, a regular and a recruited walk on? appreciate it...
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

I like this pickup a lot. Franklin had some low level D1 offers and the brains to get recruited by some of the Ivy schools. I don't expect him to become a starter at any point for UMass, or really even a significant contributor during games, but it's also not unheard of for that to happen. There's very little risk and it's preferable to trying to add a walk-on mid-season if/when the injury bug hits.

What people are saying...
"I think (Kellogg) kind of comes from the same place I come from," Franklin said. "We're both Springfield kids, we both went to Springfield schools. He's a great coach who pushes you hard every day to become better and better, and he's always got the best interests at heart. I think he's a great fit."

It's obvious that Jaylen has never been to a UMass BB game Or maybe he's an exceptional evaluator of coaches I'll leave that for the other 3 or 4 threads related to DK's coaching ability.Swampy wrote:What people are saying...

Or maybe he wants to be a politician and needs the practice.

This is another move, that in my opinion, highlights the elevated status UMASS has had in the college basketball community in the past few years. The "chaz effect" if you would.
Here's a kid with multiple IVY offers but he comes to UMASS because in his opinion, it's the the pinnacle of where he hopes to be. I've only been a serious UMASS bball fan since 08', but I've never heard of a D1 prospect turning down schollies to walk on at UMASS.
Combine this with a historical recruiting class, being a top 8 choice with a top 5 player in the nation, and it seems like we've got a little prestige to the brand right now.
All that being said, I've got no idea how this has happened. Shyrone and Derek must really know how to speak to these kids, as it can't be based upon team performance since Chaz left. If they can step up the in-game coaching and continue the recruiting hot streak, the team could be a premier A10 team in the coming years.
It could also all fall apart in a burst of flames. Let's hope for the best.

I think it's probably based on what the team achieved when Chaz WAS here.
