So in hindsight, he really isn't a bad coach, he just didn't fit the tempo that these specific UMass players needed.

Irony: Vance's offense might have been really, really effective with this year's team and it'd probably have been remarkably effective with next year's team. Granted, I'm glad we shed it, but in a perfect world where there are no expectations, we would have been an effective ddm team if he had been given give years. And yes, of course I realize that's a stupid expectation and that the world doesn't work that way. That being said, people in the coaching community love his sets and he's been very influential in changing how a lot of teams approach offense. I'm glad he's not at UMass anymore, but I don't wish him any ill will and I'm sure that a lot of the DDM principles will be put to better use with NBA athletes.

I'm not sure if Walberg is a good coach or not, but he was an awful fit here at UMass. I understand what Dk was trying to do by hiring an older experience coach who could be his right hand man (especially and mostly with DDM) while he began to grow as a young HC. However, I believe it was not a good situation for DK or the players. Often times in games it look like Walberg was calling the shots, and DK had a hard time finding himself. Last year we finally saw who DK is as a coach and what he could do. I've mentioned before that I've gone to practices in the past when Vance was there and many times it was DK standing at half court watching, not really doing anything while Walberg ran the show. The 2nd best move DK has done since he's been here is letting Vance go. Obviously Chaz has been his best move, and I could even make an arguement that Vance leaving had a bigger impact than Chaz, but I won't and don't believe so. And Quite frankly, once DK decided to go away from the DDM, Walberg served no purpose in Amherst.

Moved to '76ers....with a first year coach who is one of two former Maine HS standouts as first year NBA Head Coaches ... http://www.nba.com/sixers/roster/2013
Re: Vance Walberg hired as Assistant for the Denver Nuggets
Looks like Vance is now with the 76ers. Pretty solid read on Sam Hinkie and the 76ers philosophy in ESPN the magazine and on ESPN.com.
One piece from the article also made me think a bit about UMass' recruiting philosphy, which sounds similar to the 76ers:
"These Sixers are conspicuously long-limbed -- 10 of the 14 athletes boast a wingspan at least six inches longer than their height. Second: With the remarkable exception of forward Robert Covington -- an undrafted, sweet-shooting 24-year-old with a 7-2 wingspan -- approximately none of them can, you know, shoot.
"This is no accident. It remains scientifically impossible to develop arm length, an underrated characteristic on defense. ("Sam is very studied in regards to that," Brown says.) But as Spurs wing Kawhi Leonard has verified, it is possible to grow a prospect's shooting ability over time. And Philly, forcing turnovers at a league-high 15.6 percent through the All-Star break"
The piece also talks about tempo, etc. Anyhow, very interesting read if you like basketball and talk of philosophy. Fun to look at it through Maroon glasses and see how it applies to our team and also the Walberg tie. Worth the read.

The place where he coached from 1990-2002, sounds like it's more of a personal move by him leaning towards finding happiness. Good for him!

Pray for Fresno State!
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

It's cool that he was a high school head coach in Fresno for the past 8 years, and now has been elevated to to be the head coach at Fresno State. KEEP IT FRESNO 100%
