Killed on the boards and gave up tons of good looks from 3, of which Davidson hit most. Effort was an issue.
I know it looked that way and I thought so as well. We actually outrebounded them by 8. It might be semantics, but I didn't feel like effort was the issue, it was more of an execution issue. Poor switching on defense causing guys to be left open and misssed assignments.
Edit: Let me correct the rebounding numbers. On the post-game show they said we outrebounded them by 8. The box score doesn't lie.

For Matt Cross to have a career high game the week after he lost 20 pounds from a stomach bug is insane. Dude is an absolute warrior and as the season develops, our leader.
love the kid - he's my favorite player on the team and you are absolutely correct in calling him a warrior cuz he is! but the 20 pound weight loss I think was a bit of an exaggeration. How could a kid in his shape with out an ounce of fat on him lose 20 pounds 8-10 maybe and even then I'd say 5! I have no doubt he was in hospital and he probably even took an IV at half but no way he lost that much weight.

^^ Felt like they got a lot of good bounces…balls coming off the boards into their hands. Those may have made it look like they were beating UMass off the boards.

Too many "bunnies" at the hoop missed by the bigs. No "up fakes" to at least draw the foul or better yet, an "and one". This is a common defect in too many games. Saw Kellogg shaking his head after a number of misses. The "telegraphing" of shots made them an easy mark for blocks or shot alteration.
Q: why is this worked on, repeatedly, in practice?

As a point of reference Davidson outrebounded UMass by 8.
Davidson 31 UMass 23

I believe you have it backwards, 31 to 23 in favor of Davidson.

Yes. I corrected it above. It's the last time I will believe the post-game show stats on the radio.

There was some talk in the Frank Martin thread of the game maybe passing him by, which I didn't buy into, but his comments after today's loss have made me revisit that. A lot of talk about "kids these days", which is never a good sign.

That's getting harder and harder to teach these days. When previous generations played for guys like Bob Hurley, Morgan Wootten, or my high school coach Shaky Rodriguez you learn before anything to guard the ball. If you didn't guard the ball you never played.

Frank in the postgame radio is bemoaning the general defensive effort, yearning for the days when guys either played D or sat, without hitting the portal if they didn’t like it.
For the record, I agree with him. Play tougher on defense, guard your man, all that. But don't frame it as "kids these days", it just looks bad.
“Kids these days” just shows that you are out of touch with society. Who wants a coach that is out of touch?
Furthermore, how can you respect that?
You are not doing your due diligence as a leader for your team

Frank had players follow him here from SC, recruited 3 freshmen who get playing time, and 3 returning players who stayed to play for him. These guys know Frank and trust him and his system. These players don’t seem like the type that would be hurt or bothered by a “kids these days” quote.

I like it. Defend the ball or ride the pine. Coaches aren’t supposed to make life easy and play patty cakes, they’re there to push players to their highest potential. Absolutely zero wrong with what Frank said.

Ya, don't care about the quote. Frank's coaching the same guys as every other coach. Some coaches get their guys to play D. We're not.
He did insinuate that his old ways of enforcing standards don't fly today, and he's gotta leverage his life experience to figure it out. They will.
I hate to already be looking forward to next season, but this injury situation is rough.
I should probably put this in the recruiting thread, but I love our wing players. We'll need some help inside, though. With the way Frank likes to feed the paint, getting a high level big guy or not getting one could be the difference. Curious what the plan is.

I wonder if the Collective is breaking team bonds and bringing resentment to the locker room.
Out of human nature, the players must be thinking wow why is he getting paid and I’m not when I’m doing way more than him on the court.

Definitely something we are considering and keeping a pulse on. There is no perfect formula. Every school is dealing with these issues, but we aren’t using them as an excuse for inaction. We need to build a strong NIL program to compete not just nationally, but in the A10.
Our Bi-Weekly Member Meetings (Zoom) are open to members at all contribution levels. Please join us and participate in meetings and committees as we grow. We need all the help we can get! Next meeting is Thursday at 830pm via Zoom.
