Re: Cage memories - Help a Collegian writer

It makes me proud to have played for Coach Leaman and with some great guys Erving, Skinner, Endicott, Trow, Vogeley, Peters, Olsen, Murphy, Pitino, Austin, Burke, Stokes, Guys who all played hard and didn’t give an inch. If your team came to the Cage they were in for a battle. The UMass fans were ...

Sam Provo

Some sad news Sam Provo passed away on Monday after a few difficult years health wise. Sam was a warrior both on and off the court. He played in the late 60’s and was a teammate of Dr J. Always friendly and a great teammate. May Sam RIP along with Ray Ellerbrook, Ken Mathias, John Murphy, Tom Austin ...

Re: 54 Years ago Tonight! Original Post

Happy 75th Birthday to Julius a great teammate and a true friend to this very day. He was a great guy to play with and that UMass bond has endured thru all these years. Couldn’t have better teammates and true friends and we have gotten together regularly thru the years and always share laughs and ...

Re: Question for Tom McLaughlin

It was fate. I decided to leave Tennessee which at the time was in the top 10 and they treated their players first class but I was the only player from NYC and as a freshman I averaged 18 points a game. I never felt welcomed down there. So I told my folks I was coming home.
My brother Frankie was an ...

Re: Game 18, 2024-25: at Fordham (1/15)

The fact that we are leaving the A10 and taking Fordham off the schedule is discouraging and to lose the history of how UMass built the program up by playing in the Yankee Conference and challenging UConn and URI and then battling Providence, Holy Cross and BC in New England. It was a 20 year battle ...

Re: Game 18, 2024-25: at Fordham (1/15)

It’s a sad day for UMass basketball to be playing their last time in the Rose Hill Gym. A lot of great memories in the old building. I can remember growing up and my 3 older brothers having practice in that gym and me tagging along and climbing in those stands. All the great teams coming down from ...

Re: Mike Babul

Such sad news. Mike was all about playing the game the right way. Defense first and get the ball to the open man. Total effort on both ends of the court. You represented UMass with class and never backed down.
May you RIP and you played the game the right way’

May he RIP. A true gentleman in every sense of the word. Represented UMass with class. A real warrior and played hard every single down. Had a sense of class when he played.

Glad you are doing well at 88. My mom who lived til 92 and enjoyed every day said”if you live long enough you will get something.” Thanks for all your years of being a true UMass fan. You got to experience some great UMass sports events.

Re: Game 23, 2023-24: Rhode Island (2/11)

Watching UMass can be taxing at times because UMass had unbelievable diehard fans that are desperately waiting for them to do something. They have progressed but now need to deliver.
I will tell you a story about a UMass/URI game back in the 1973 season. We were playing a good URI team and them and ...

Re: Game 11, 2023-24: vs Temple / Old Dominion (DHC, 12/24)

Father John Smegal is not only a wonderful catholic priest but a great human being and thinks only of others and has no motive but then to be there for these young men as they go thru all the rigors of being a student athlete. When I was @ UMass I was looking for a Chaplain and Fr Quigley said Fr ...

Re: State/Future of the Program

As a former player I was fortunate to play for a great coach in Jack Leaman and with great team players of which two went on to play in the NBA and Rick Ptino went on to be a legendary coach and another Mike Flanagan went on to win a World Series and a Cy Young Award for the Baltimore Orioles. We ...

Re: Return of Derek Kellogg

A great former player that would be terrific would be Al Skinner. He still has a desire to coach and would be a nice piece. Al has no ego and just wants to be part of a program. My nephew Jim Mclaughlins son Shane Mclaughlin started as a PG for Bryant and said “Al taught him so much about Defense ...
