Re: KAEO Matt Cross

Niles, what would it accomplish? If a P5 team came in with a substantially better offer after year 1, the kid is gone. You could put in monetary penalties that would at least give you money to compensate for the loss and put you in better position to find a replacement. It also might be possible to...

Re: KAEO Matt Cross

Collective contracts are not binding, so a multi-year contract means nothing. I’m not an expert on contracts, but I see no reason an NIL contract couldn’t be structured in such a way as to incentivize a player to stay more than one season (and/or penalize for leaving). There are pros and cons to th...

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024

The kids who've made multiple trips through the portal should all transfer to the University of the Benjamins. That way they won't be lying when they say that they're playing for the name on the front of the jersey. Are players saying that they're playing for the name on the front of the jersey? I ...

Re: KAEO Matt Cross

Niles, I don;t think you understand how the Collective contracts are worded. I'll let Patrick provide a full explanation, but payment are made in increments and start after the season starts. So if a player leaves before the start of the season, no funds have changed hands. I know what I'm suggesti...

Re: KAEO Matt Cross

The collectives have no power to restrict a transfer. A multi year contract would hamstring the collective not retain the player. Being a player and being employed by a collective is not the same job. They can structure a contract however they want as long as both parties agree. They could add in l...

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024

^^ My extra curriculars were three part time jobs to help pay for college. I didn't get a free ride. Now you just sound like a bitter old man talking about tough you had it and no one that comes after you should have it any easier. Someone is willing to pay kids money, in some cases life-altering m...

Re: KAEO Matt Cross

My thought is the only way to fix this is to give players one free transfer and then sit out a year on future transfers unless there is a coaching change. Most, if not all, players do not want to sit a year even if they are getting paid. However, the courts don't agree with this. I disagree. Aside ...

The individual adults around them... coaches, administrators, apparel executives, tv executives, etc etc... there's an entire college basketball industry and the individuals in and adjacent to it that profit off of them.

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024

There was a time when those “thousands of hours of free labor” were considered extra-curricular activities. At what point will high schooll players want to get paid too? How many extra curriculars did you do in college that required dozens of hours a week of your time, and made buckets of money for...

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024

It's more than just money, it's the new mindset of players. Look at duke, they just lost like 8 guys. You can't tell me that isn't gobs of cash down there to pay. It's the lack of wanting to compete, grass is always greener, thinking they are better than they are, etc. Wait until the inevitable exp...

Re: KAEO Matt Cross

Final thought on Cross, even though he was such a warrior for two years, I hope the MassCo was able to terminate his contract immediately and save any remaining money for other targets. That has been the protocol with other transfers and it should be the same for Matt. Did Cross wait as long as he ...

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024

I like what we have returning. Add in Matt Cross, and we'll be in great shape. Obviously, though, we don't have a proven guy over 6'8''. I'm really pleased with our lack of activity in the portal, shows the staff has very strong relationships with our guys (though would really like to know more abo...
