Game 7, 2019-20: vs St. John's (Mohegan Sun, 11/24)

Post by MikeUMA » Fri Nov 22, 2019 11:55 am

Sunday's game will be against either Arizona State or St. John's.
If we win Saturday, we get the 1:00 slot against the winner of ASU/SJU
If we lose Saturday, we get the 3:30 slot against the loser of ASU/SJU

ESPN's algorithm gives ASU a 62% chance of beating SJU.

Given VA's power, the safe bet is that we'll be playing St John's at 3:30 on Sunday.

We're 0-8 all time against the Red Storm, but have only played them twice since the '60s.

Arizona State, for that matter, we've never faced.

Stayed and watched the SJ/ASU game. Complete street ball from both sides. ASU's talent pulled away in the 2nd half after being down 9 at the half. SJ's was EXTREMELY careless with the ball. Throwing it OB and to ASU without pressure even being put on them.

We should win tomorrow as we are the better TEAM. SJ's has some talent and crashes the boards HARD, but we should be able to turn them over and defensively they are not connected. We should get the shots we want. Rebounding and guarding 1v1 in the half court will be our biggest challenges.

^ I feel that this game is pretty even. However, if we don't shoot better we'll have to be great at every other facet of the game. St. John's is a lot better offensively than Virginia. Of course, their defense is nothing compared to Virginia's, but we have to make open shots.

I agree with your assessment on the quality of play from SJU. I stayed for the first half and it was pretty sloppy basketball. Our guys should come in hungry, aggressive, and ready to knock down some shots. Sy will be a little more comfortable, and both TJ and Carl will be better.

Would like to make the trip tomorrow-- will tickets be available at the gate?

always like to read what opposing teams beat writers have to say about UMASS...this guy seems to have done his research and in my opinions shows that people nationally are starting to notice what's brewing up in Amherst. Prediction seems to be a little homerish, but I guess that's to be expected.

I guess that VEGAS has us as underdogs -3 to -12. We can beat that.

A player to be wary of is Heron. He's a big, strong guard who can take it to the hole and also shoot from 3. When I was working in CT I remember his high school winning 3 straight state championships. They were by far the best team in the state, even though they were in a lower division. Heron's teammate was Tryn Flowers, our former player now at LIU. Heron was a 5* recruit and Flowers was mostly overlooked even though he had decent numbers.

It's a bit like the story of Romeo Langford (now with the Celtics) and Sean East.
