Game 5, 2019-20: Rider (11/20)
Game 5, 2019-20: Rider (11/20)
You could call this the last tune-up before we play Virginia this weekend. On the other hand, let's not overlook Rider.
The Broncs were picked to finish a second behind Iona in the 11-team MAAC this year. Several Broncs named to the conference pre-season teams:
Senior guard Stevie Jordan, 1st Team
RS Junior forward Frederick Scott, 2nd Team
RS Junior guard/forward Dimencio Vaughn, 2nd Team
Senior center Tyere Marshall, 3rd Team
That's an experienced team there, so that's something of a concern against our youth.
Last year they were 16-15 / 11-7 MAAC
Rider is 2-1 this season. Like CCSU, they had to go to Arizona State, and also got smoked, 92-55 yesterday.
https://gobroncs.com/news/2019/11/17/me ... state.aspx
Jordan scored 15 points on 7-12 shooting, but turned it over 9 times. Team turned it over a total of 29.
Broncs shot 51% from 2, but 3-21 (14%) from 3.
Their other games: both on the road...
91-84 at Coppin State
81-54 at Delaware State
In scoring: Jordan 14.7 ppg, Scott 14.0, Vaughn 13.7, Marshall 12.3
On the glass: Vaughn 9.0 rpg, Scott 7.3
Jordan is their leading assist man at 11 on the season, but the ASU game killed him, now has 17 turnovers on the season
With the low-majors they beat, and getting smoked by ASU, it's a bit hard to know what to expect vs us. They play a bunch of guys, but after their top 6, production really falls off.
Jinx alert: UM has never lost to Rider in 9 prior meetings.

Still remember this comeback. UMass used a 40-9 run over 12 minutes in the second half to overcome a 22-point deficit:

Daryl Traynham... that's a name I haven't heard of in quite awhile.

I remember this other one that the article metioned:MassMan06 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2019 3:16 pmStill remember this comeback. UMass used a 40-9 run over 12 minutes in the second half to overcome a 22-point deficit:

Because I was there with some buds in full face paint in a sea of Orange (since we decided to buy tickets on our own instead of going on the fan bus). That was an awesome time, and we got some airtime on TV as "sad UMass fans" during the lowest points of it.The last time UMass rallied from as large a margin was on March 28, 2008 in the NIT Quarterfinals as the Minutemen came back from a 54-32 with 14:37 left in the second half to post an 81-77 victory on the way to the NIT Finals.

Try not to think about how the team fell behind 22 points to Rider.

Refuse To Lose!!!
Re: Game 5, 2019-20: Rider (11/20)
I could certainly be wrong but I think that fans see this is a trap game more than the players and coaches do. They’ll be ready Wednesday.thecaptain wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2019 9:39 pmholy trap game, batman. stay focused guys. take care of business with rider and the uva game means so much more

That's one thing that I really like about this team: they don't seem like the type to putz around with anybody. I thought CCSU might beat the spread by virtue of playing harder than us - obviously not the case. They are humble, they are competitive, and they know that they haven't earned anything yet, and they also know that grinding their asses off is the only way they will eventually get more than the 2,000 or so people crowds that they have gotten so far. We may lose if they can easily beat the press or our three-pointers aren't falling, but I am very positive that we won't lose because of a lack of effort or preparation a la the Howard game.

While I don't think this is the case.. if this team is already at the point of thinking of games as trap games, I'm already concerned.

I think a good number of BYU fans wish the BYU-UMass football game was on ESPN+ instead of $20 on FloSports.
The combo of NESN and ESPN+ seems to be a winner.
