After years of coming in too hot with my W-L predictions, I think I’m going to sit this year out. I suspect they will win between 12-16 games.

This is year 3 for McCall but feels more like year 1. Saw some good things and some concerning things in the first couple years (the concerning outweighing the good but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been any good things.)

How the team plays and how the team responds to McCall are the biggest things for me this year. That’ll tell me all I need to know about the coach and if he’s the right guy for the job. That’s way more important than any W-L record.

I think the addition of TB and the rest of the staff will be a big plus and have a big effect on the team. His established relationships with the Woodstock kids will certainly help with the chemistry.
I'm with LS and feel pretty optimistic they will be much improved and fun to watch. Lookin forward to it

I'm a big fan of the addition of Bergeron as he's a Springfield guy and has a very impressive track record, but I also have a little concern that those Woodstock relationships might alienate some outside that group. His history of being a great recruiter and relationship builder probably squashes all of that, but it's a possibility. I'm very excited to see how things develop with him, McCall, and this group of young men. I hope we're building something here for the future, and not just tearing it back down after one or two years.

Don't know if he will be a star player for us but I think buggs will be a great program guy. Always cheering on other UMass teams and seems to really enjoy being a UMass student. Will be a good glue guy to keep the team together

You can't have a 13 player rotation. You can't even give 10 guys a lot of playing time. That's usually not a problem when your roster is more or less evenly divided into four classes. The freshmen and sophomores do most of the sitting and they know their time will come. This season, there's gonna be three or four freshmen stuck on the bench wondering why the other three or four freshmen are getting playing time ahead of them. (Obviously, they will understand why Tre Mitchell is playing.) We'll see how the chemistry is then. Pardon my lack of enthusiasm.

I think they will run a little deeper with all the pressing they will be doing. I also if the players buy in that shouldn't be a problem. From what I've observed I don't see buggs being a problem there

I think that Carl, Keon, Tre, Samba, and Sy are all locks to be key pieces in the rotation, and after that it seems like Preston, TJ, and Djery should see plenty of PT as well. That’s 8 players, and I expect us to use a consistent 9-10 man rotation when at full health, but I’m unsure how those last couple of spots will play out.

I think it’s safe to say that one of the two new PGs, East or K. Mitchell, will probably occupy one of them (and it sounds like East has looked more college-ready so far). That would leave Buggs, CJ, and the other freshman PG as the remaining options. I personally like Buggs’ game and attitude from what I’ve seen on tape, but I expect them all to get looks early in the year so that the staff can play around with different lineups and see who helps the team the most.

No matter how it plays out with who gets the nods and who sits at full health though, we have to take into account that we will probably rarely be completely 100% healthy. So even if guys like CJ, Buggs, and the other of Kolton/East end up being (for the most part) “reserves”, they may still get plenty of action by necessity in some games/stretches of the season.

As long as we are not playing so many that we lose momentum. With DK, his subbing pattern always seemed so eradic and momentum killing just to get guys in there. Think this will be completely different because of style of play, though.

Agree. I don't think it will happen but Bergeron would run 10-12 deep and sub players in like hockey with 5 coming off and 5 going on

Been looking forward to installment #2 on the freshmen, TJ Weeks. It's finally here.

Well then you must turn in your umasshoops credentials and no longer post here. Anything less than unrealistic expectations and overreactions after 2 or 3 losses disqualifies you sir!

Bergeron was also 12 deep and could get away with that.

^. Because he had better players going in, it’s amazing what you can do strategy wise when you have better players than the team you are playing.....didn’t notice any low level prep schools on this year’s schedule....the A10 teams can probably beat a press...especially one with your backups...

Sometimes I wish I was 12 deep when I read this board.
