Anniversary of "I'll kill you!"

Post by MikeUMA » Wed Feb 13, 2019 2:39 pm

25 years ago, Chaney rushes Calipari in the post-game presser.

We've talked about it a lot over the years, but the Collegian did an exhaustive piece about it, talking to a lot of the people who were there at the time, including a great get of one of the refs himself.

Sage on Twitter asked why not Marty Dobrow, and Touri addressed it:

Yeah, kind of a bummer that Dobrow wasn't in it, as he was the premier UM beat writer at the time. But Touri did get Joe Burris, who was a good substitute. That was back when the Globe had money to spend and regularly had a presence in the Mullins Center.

If Umass was a legit top 20 team today - The Globe would find money on their budget to have someone there now too....

Did the Globe have anyone out during 13-14?

Did they send a writer in 2013-14 when we were ranked, before the wheels fell off? I can't remember for certain, but I don't think they did.

No, and that was not really legit .... If the 14-15 team had kept the momentum, I bet they would have had a presence though.

You fools, of course it wasn't legit, DK was the coach!

But no, they did not. Hell, it took Channel 5 until late December/early January to recognize we were ranked.

Bob Ryan went to a bunch of those games in 13-14. Don't know if that was on assignment, or he was just going as a basketball fan. He became semi-retired around that time if I remember correctly.

He did that two years in a row. It was a project he did where he went to see every team in New England at least once and would write about each. I recall the writeups being quite fun to read.

I caught him pregame at McMurphy's before one of the games and we sat there and watched him on TV on Around The Horn.

I just made my way through Amin's article. Kudos to Amin on a really great, well told story. His reporting has been excellent all year. The great Steve Buckley tweeted the story out and left a pretty cool comment on the collegian site as well.
