Merrimack is holding a presser Thursday am to announce move to D1, and Northeast 10. Transition will take several years.
They won D2 Championship this year and I believe would be allowed 3 more scholarships, or so, as D1. D2 is much tinier than D1 or D3.
Important to UMASS primarily for competing for recruits at local schools such as Billerica, but just creating another destination within MA for D1 prospects.
In my mind, another case for UMASS needing to increase its recruiting travel budget. It can recruit nationally, and into Canada, but not without support.

I'm not necessarily worried that MC will compete with UMass for the same recruits - I think UMass has way more to offer in terms of a school and a lacrosse program. That being said you never know. I'm much more worried with BU recently adding lax and the potential for BC to add lax in the near future. I think we've lost a couple of recruits to BU and I can't imagine how many we'd lose to BC.

Just an FYI
In 2018 on the men's side
71 D1 teams
72 D2 teams
241 D3 teams
