The problem with the "Coastal Carolina is a first-year FBS" team (which is obviously true) is that it ignores the fact that CC is in South Carolina and UMass is in MA. The two programs exist in entirely different universes as far as football is concerned.

^ Right, because programs only recruit players in their region. CC's total team recruiting rankings for the last 5 years are well below that of UMass, based on 247sports.

^ Niles - Ever hear of "geographic bias"?

Here's an example: http://www.fangraphs.com/tht/geographic ... mlb-draft/

"Teams overrate tools on high school position players from non-baseball power states."

Probably what's going on with high school football players in our area. Yes, I know that we recruit from all over, but our rosters are skewed to the Northeast.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Ok then we are dealing a failure to recruit the best players. Again, on the coaching staff.

If kids from MA are overrated on the recruiting sites (which I don't believe) then STOP bringing in so many kids from MA. Take a chance on a kid who only has FCS offers from Texas instead of the competing with Buffalo and Eastern Michigan for a kid from Adams who is probably being overrated due to geographic bias.

I'm not buying the idea that a New England FBS program like UMass can't recruit at the same level as an FCS program in South Carolina.

I call bullshit. UMass lines were dominated on both sides by a 1st year FBS team. No way should that be happening if our coaches are doing their job well, including recruiting.
I've probably posted this before, but an old saying is that "Games are won and lost in the trenches". Thus far, we have been pushed around on both sides of the ball. Either the talent level isn't what we thought it was, the coaching sucks or a combination of the two. Even taking into account that we were down 2 of our best D linemen CC should not have been able to run that easily on us.
When you switch to a 4 man front and have maybe 7 guys ready to play there, and then lose arguably your top 2, that easily translates to getting steam rolled by an option team that is quicker. All of which goes back to coaching and putting guys in position to succeed.

What is the excuse for the offensive line ?

Not an excuse. Its still a complete screw up on the coaches. We have a bunch of Freshmen (redshirting) on the D line and a woefully thin there to making the switch to a four man front as evidenced by what happened when two guys are not there. In terms of coaching and the OL, Why is Raquan a tackle now? He should be blowing holes in the middle of the line, that's where Young gets sent as a sacrifice every play.

Bay Area UMie wrote: Wed Sep 06, 2017 2:10 am IMO Whipple’s situation (inability to make us a very competitive program and ultimately generate more w’s in 3+ yrs ) is beyond game planning and game day decisions. It has been well documented that the operating conditions the program finds itself immersed in (no conference affiliation, deplorable 50-year old stadium, indifference from students/alums, New England region produces just 1% of all FBS talent, our football operating budget is a paltry $8m-SEC teams average $34m, ACC teams like BC average $28m and even the AAC conference, where we aspire to gain membership, football operating budgets are on average 2x/yr more than what we spend) leaves us at a huge competitive disadvantage. Take a guy like David Shaw from Stanford or Mark Dantonio from MSU and situate them at UMass under these sub-industry standard conditions and I have serious doubts that they produce a winner on the field.
Just curious which one of these excuses you list above leads to our defense not being able to properly defend the read option ever since Whip started (and before, to be honest). They weren't facing Denard Robinson out there. IMO, it is probably that 1% of FBS talent come from New England. That is why the defense can't stop anyone. Or maybe it is the "deplorable 50-year old stadium." Maybe that is why.
A simple-minded response from a very simple mind.

Wow, despite the Tennessee showing, this is incredibly embarrassing for the program. UMass lost to Coastal Carolina...UMass LOST to Coastal Carolina.

^ This is why people can't assume a win vs Ohio next week. This team albeit snake bitten plays just (good or bad) enough to lose and I can't figure it out! Any one or two plays in each game and the outcome would be different but it NEVER seems to happen!

I know one thing that if Ford can't play next week Whip needs to get one of the other QB's ready like maybe West. We are not going to win any games with Comis at QB.
