How dare he make a statement that has been proven true! Oh the nerve of him...
Funny the NCAA doesn't agree with you...

Yes. It was late in the season in Williams' senior year (94/95). Caused quite a stir. I have some old articles on the subject, but haven't gotten around to posting 'em yet.

Globe came out with something during the 94-95 season where the GPA's of several UMass players ran on the front page of the sports section, and they were below NCAA standards.

Yep - big issue on privacy of records.

Buckley works for a paper that is going into the drain at an accelerating rate - in 2 years he'll lucky if he is writing for a town weekly.

The Herald matters not.

I love it when people who have no clue about the Camby situation reference that as UMass being lax on academic standards and character issues. Last I remember Camby got in trouble for accepting illegal gifts, nothing to do with academics or the law, rather violations of the NCAA.

Like everyone else says, it really angers me when an alum pulls a cheap shot that isn't even true.

I just sent him some feedback, and encouraged him to write something positive about this team.

How is it a fact? Yes, the Final Four was vacated for using an ineligible player. But since the NCAA cleared the school itself for any wrong doing, how was the school sacrificing academics and its integrity?

Look, the graduation rates and the sucess of the students during that era aren't very respectable, that can't be argued. It's the way the game's played though...

Just emailed Beaver Suckley
my questions to him were
1) why no mention of the two previous Williams incidents? Al Skinner is a great coach don't get me wrong, but a lot of other coaches would do/feel the same way...3 strikes and you are no longer part of this team.
2) No mention of one of the biggest no-no's in sports...betting on your own team and throwing games purposely as BC had. I know it was a while ago and maybe irrelevant, but if you are going to write a BC article stick to BC, instead of throwing UMASS under the bus for something that happened 11 years ago not recently. Especially when he is an alum.

did I mention that after my rant I feel a lot better than when I first read that "wipe my a** with" article

That's funny, I read a couple articles that said Cal's graduation rate for players while he was at UMass was near 80 percent. And what success of students are you talking about? Do you know all of these former players and how they are doing now? Quit throwing shit at the wall and hoping it sticks. You sound like a fool.

Perhaps Al should promote the program a little more.

2 years ago ranked 6th in the country, playing Pittsburgh at home on Senior night with school in session and 1,000 empty seats.

I like Al, but his failure to sell the program over the years is certainly not something to be proud of.

If we had the success BC has had in wins/losses over the past 6 or 7 years, the Mullins would be sold out every night.

As far as Buckley, he has never done much to support Umass. His slap at Umass was uncalled for and inacurate. Who is to say anyone at Umass KNEW Camby was taking money from an agent.

Does anyone remember anything about the grades controversey from the mid 90's someone mentioned earlier? All I remember is the invasion of privacy issue and honestly do not remember what the issue was about the grades to start with. Any links to articles from that time? Before I call him names, I want to refresh my maroon colored memory.

I remember the conclusion of the grades "scandal" was that all the players were within the established standards set by both the NCAA and the school in order to participate in sports.

I wasn't at UMass yet, but loved that team...They would have rolled OSU if Mike Williams has been playing. Clutchest motherfucker I've ever seen in a UMass uni.

Does anyone else remember the BC grades scandal from Gary Williams team from the 80s too? Weren't the players taking night classes they never attended?

Fuckley is an ass...

Have we ever confirmed whether isithow? is a UConn fan, BC fan or Kristen Lappas? Thanks.
