Mike Sullivan on Maxwell

Post by Kosty » Thu Apr 10, 2003 1:10 pm

Last week, head coach Steve Lappas and his assistants nailed down a commitment from 2003 prospect Maurice Maxwell, a quick and long 6-5, 180-pound swingman from Lutheran Christian Academy in Philadelphia, Pa.

Maxwell is a player who can score points in bunches. He had been looked at during his recruiting process by Memphis, George Washington, Oklahoma State and San Jose State.

Maxwell is a lanky and fast player who thrives in transition settings. His long extension aids him in finishing on forays to the bucket. He will need to improve his strength. When he does, Maxwell will be able to finish more effectively. But he is certainly capable of helping Massachusetts out right away with his offensive skills.

Maxwell took an unofficial trip to George Washington back on Aug. 5. This past season at Celestial/Philadelphia Prep, Maxwell averaged 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. . . .

Now if we can only run a lot more then we'll be in business.

May be the point in his last 2 years

Everyone says we need to get a Point Guard to replace AA when he graduates but Maxwell could be him. He played point in HS and has said that's his favored position. He may back up AA & Artie his first 2 years and end up our starting point guard in his Junior season if he pans out. He should get plenty of minutes this year if he can score.

...And I know you can't put to much stock in stats, but it really caught my eye that he averaged 12 assists per game as a pg last season. That is very unusual to see for a guy 6-5. I also remember reading a scouting report that says he has a very calm presence with the ball in traffic, which is something that good point guards have. So hopefully he has that ability if we need him to play there.

Imagine the possibilities with a 6'5" point, that can shoot.

Amauro "Amar" Austin, a reporter/scout - who produces the Philadelphia Prep Hoops Report - stated the following in an email to me about Maxwell.
Amauro Austin wrote:Game wise, Maxwell - nicknamed "Snake" - reminds of Julius Hodge. He's a late bloomer who could star at UMass and play any of 3 positions at 6'5 1/2" 175, PG, WG or SF.

He's a deadly mid-range shooter and super athlete. His nickname personifies his game 110%. He's smooth as butter and cold as ice - he was coveted by half of the A-10.

Basically, had he been a NYer, he'd have gone in the Big East, thin build or not. He's also a bit older and that always helps with maturity - he did 6 years of high school.

6 YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL?????

I want to make a very sarcastic comment here, but instead I'll ask anybody in the know to fill me in on what's going on with this.

MM - That will make him the same age that Jackie Rogers and Gabe Lee will be when they graduate if he uses his five to play four at UMass.

OC: I don't know about you, but I finished high school in 4 years.

Granted this is all a moot point now, but are so desperate that we're now recruiting kids who come to school on the short bus?
