A lot of good points made about this game already, including kudos for very good coaching down the stretch. I liked giving the foul with 27 seconds left, giving a pressure 1-and-1. When your team is scoring well, giving 1-and-1 seems good strategy. Jones played way more minutes than usual, and was effective defending even when extending away from the hoop. Dibaji at the 5 worked well. UMass had 7 turnovers in the first half; just 2 in the second half. 7 UMass players made 3s. CJ and Noah were awesome. Great win!

Zone D isn't going to work this well against most teams, Rutgers is just a really bad outside shooting team, so it worked last night. I definitely think there's value in working on the zone D and deploying it heavily against some teams, and even in some situations against most/all teams.

Transfer portal guys will have to sit out a year, so it wouldn’t matter unless he focuses only on graduate transfers which is a terrible team & recruiting philosophy.
This is false. First-time transfers do not have to sit a year.
Is this just for 1st time transfers? A one time exception?
I'm 99% sure the new law of the land is that there's no sit-out period for all first-time transfers. After that, if you're not a grad you have to sit. Grads can transfer without sitting, regardless of how many times they've transferred before.

Amazing what a little crowd would do only down 7

Incorrect. No longer have to sit out a year
Thought that was only a Covid rule change, not permanent. My bad..

Regardless that shouldn’t be the priority here. We still have 0 commitments and that’s a significant concern.

This game shows how a bad coach will lose you the game. There are many examples on how McCall out coached Pikiell today, but I will focus on the last 27 seconds to win the game. McCall knew to foul the worst FT shooter for Rutgers, shooting just 40% FT with 27 seconds score 81-80. Coach Pikiell should not of had him in the game or at least not allowed him to handle the ball. Result a miss on a 1 and 1, UMass ball. Last play of game Rutgers has a TO to use with 4+ seconds left. Call the TO and set your D it's the last possession and you're not taking the TO home, McCall explained why didn't he use his TO credit to McCall. Instead we get a free inbounds pass, unimpeded drive up the court and a shot where Fernandez was able to set his feet and shoot. Result UMass wins!!!

1-3-1 zone with UMass length could be very good.

Do we have good length? I don’t really feel like we do.

I think we do aside from our PGs. DD, Baji, Steadman, TJ, CJ. McCrory all have length. Mitchell has a pretty good wing span, too.

^ I mean, we COULD have a lineup with a lot of length - Steadman, Buttrick, Dibaji, TJ, Garcia... but some of our best players (Fernandes, CJ Kelly, Rich Kelly) don't have length for their position.

Yeah I guess it’s length for the position they are playing that I wonder about. I feel like we are average in size and length across the board and if you tried to maximize that it would come at the expense of offense (which might be ok if the pickup at the defensive end is good enough — I don’t particularly think it would be.)

The talent overcame some early and questionable substitutions that got us in a hole. CJ and Noah each had stretches where they just about single handedly willed the team back. I also thought McCall did a good job in the 2nd half adjusting from some of the 1st half mistakes.

The long and short of this game is this: this is an example of why you never stop watching and supporting as a fan. You never know when you might see something magical. Saturday was magical.

Hopefully with the week off they can get some rest, make some adjustments, and be prepared for an early tilt with Harvard this weekend.

CJ Kelly is the player that have us the spark in the beginning of the 2nd half to make this comeback. If it wasn’t for him, we would have never won.

Rich Kelly hit 4 3’s and it seemed like every time he hit one it was during a moment we needed it most.

Trent Buttrick had an off game however he hit the 2nd biggest shot of the game.

McCall playing Greg Jones the majority of the 2nd half was the right move, plain and simple we needed a big body that can go pound to pound with the Rutgers big men.

TJ Weeks might low key by our best rebounder, he knows when to attack the rim and where to position himself.

Lastly, Noah of course had a beautiful game winner but his ball handling, vision, and assists to find the open man was superb.

FWIW…Rutgers is ahead of Clemson late and will likely break their losing streak with a win over an ACC team…the 11th best ACC team, but an ACC team nevertheless.
