2020 Season
Re: 2020 Season
I think that we all better get used to the idea of football (and all the other fall sports) being played in the spring. Winter sports are still up in the air.
Re: 2020 Season
It’s either going to be in the spring with fans, spring without fans (God I hope not), or the fall without fans. UMass and other schools should just admit the obvious and make an announcement; someone has to be the first. My gut says you’ll start seeing announcements after the Ivy League makes theirs.

Re: 2020 Season
Unless they backtracked, the decision for the fall with no fans has already been made. It's just a matter of announcing it and pushing forward, as well as hoping and praying there is a season.
I'm curious, and afraid, of what's going to happen with the Auburn game.

Re: 2020 Season
The fact that the NCAA is willing to risk lives simply because of the money involved in football says everything you need to know about their guiding principles. That UMass is playing along is just as bad in my opinion.
Turns out, just because you write your name on a baby doesn't mean you get to keep it."
Re: 2020 Season
UMass, unlike many other universities, is basically OL for Fall 20, with a handful of exceptions.
How can it then foster a full Fall schedule? Trust me, Fall 20 athletics is crumbling quickly.

“ The Big Ten is expected to announce today that it will go with a conference-only football schedule for this fall, a person with direct knowledge situation tells @TheAthleticCFB.”
Our athletic department is in trouble if football is in the fall but we can’t play any buy games, right?

Re: 2020 Season
Covid-19 is going to have impacts, but we don't know the end game. View this no OOC games as a stop gap before some conferences move the season to the Spring. Could be wrong, but trending that way.
As losing say 1.9M buy game, the staff has taken a minimum of a 2% pay cut and there will be less travel. It is going to hurt, but not the end of the world scenario. Hoping for the season to be moved to the Spring as our young under clansmen will have time to grow more and more time with practices. It's all fluid and my hopes. We have lights so have some flexibility for weekend games and scheduling multiple sports.
Same with the university and paying bonds with less housing revenue coming etc.

Re: 2020 Season
How about no games? Article in San Diego UT this morning said PAC12 and ACC are considering same (ACC with Notre Dame added because of affiliations in other sports). If other conferences follow, that would leave UMass, UConn, BYU and a hand full of other indies out in the cold.Upstate10 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 2:22 pm “ The Big Ten is expected to announce today that it will go with a conference-only football schedule for this fall, a person with direct knowledge situation tells @TheAthleticCFB.”

Maybe each independent could tie in with one of the conferences? Maybe a new, temporary, "Indie" conference? Doesn't look encouraging to me.
Re: 2020 Season
So far these are P5 conference and not G5 conferences, which most of our games are scheduled. There is a big difference between the P5 on power and money than the G5. The P5 have always been money hogs and this allows the P5 to skip buy games. However there is no telling were this ends as possible skipping the fall season and playing in the spring. Us independents have each other if necessary. When Liberty started to play, they played NMSU twice. We can do the same with Army, UConn, and Liberty. Two out of the three are bus trips and will save some money, but losing the 1.9M Auburn game will sting for a while.classof62-64 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 1:05 pmHow about no games? It's kind of a contract isn't it? If we show up, and they won't play, do we still get the $$$$ ?

Re: 2020 Season
Say it's up in the air and we may not push, needing SEC games in the future. My wild a$$ guess is that we get something like 300k or perhaps more likely is something that Matty V suggests as the home and home in basketball and reschedule in the future.

Re: 2020 Season
I don't understand why UMass would want a home & home in basketball instead of the $1.9M. Wasn't there an article fairly recently saying P5's were moving away from buy games? Seems like the money would be the preferred route even if we have to move the buy game to 2030.

SEC's not going to the conference-only format... just yet.
