2020-21 Season
Re: 2020-21 Season
I will worry about it when I find out it if there is even going to be a season

^ Maybe I'm overreacting, but this sounds promising. Does this need to be approved by the governor, who so far has been very conservative?
NCAA Approves Voluntary Activities for Football, Basketball Starting June 1
An NCAA vote Wednesday cleared the return of student-athletes to campus in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball on June 1 through June 30, multiple sources told Yahoo Sports.
This decision ends a moratorium on all athletic activities through May 31.
Sources told Yahoo Sports that the Division I Council is expected to address sports other than football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball as soon as possible. That could take place within the next week.
Re: 2020-21 Season
It's a first step, but maybe there's hope. We've been told "no students, no sports" on several occasions.

UMass-Amherst Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy just announced that at least some students will be on campus in Fall 2020. The number is still unknown but "without a doubt there will be students on campus".

Re: 2020-21 Season
Carl Pierre made a statement on behalf of his teammates. I thought it was worth sharing here:

He is a true leader and representative of UMass. I couldn't be more proud to have him on this team, and I can't wait to get out to the Mullins and support these guys.

Re: 2020-21 Season
Rothstein's thoughts on the 2020-2021 Atlantic 10 season. Spoiler alert, we're ranked 8th. It's hard to argue with the top 5, I'd personally put us 6th as of today.

Re: 2020-21 Season
While I would like to think we're top 5, Rothstein's analysis is pretty fair. My main concern for this year's team is rebounding. I'm reasonably comfortable with the offense and based on what we are reading (I know it's all speculation) we have a bunch of good defenders.
I've posted earlier that we could average close to 80 points a game, depending on a few "ifs".
1. TJ comes back at full strength. Nobody expects him to shoot 49% from 3, but 42 or 43 will be fine. I'll give him 14 points a game.
2. Walker needs to be more consistent. He showed flashes of dynamic offense, but had a lot of mediocre games. He needs to get to 8+ per game.
3. The freshmen (Dominguez, DeGray, Garcia, McCrory) need to contribute 16 points between them. Depends on playing time.
I'll give Tre 18, Carl 8, Santos 7 and the combination of Kolton, Gasperini and Buggs 7 for a total of 40.
That comes to 78 points a game and there is potential upside for Tre and Carl to offset others not hitting the mark. It doesn't change if Fernandes get his waiver as he will take PT from others.
As I said up top, rebounding looks to be the weak link. Other than Tre, who is going to get boards? Rothstein's lineup is very small. I can almost see Walker starting in place of Santos to give us more size, assuming his offense is good and his defense improves.
Anyhow, it's good to be talking basketball again. I pray we have a season and somehow fans are allowed. If the stands are empty our guys will have a distinct advantage . Had to throw a little humor in there.

Re: 2020-21 Season
I agree that Rothstein's analysis is fair, noting that he has URI 6th based on them getting waivers granted for the talented transfers. If Noah Fernandes got a waiver and URI's Mitchells don't, we should easily finish ahead of them. I think we're better if no-one gets waivers also. I also have been thinking we're better than Duquesne perhaps because of the win last season, but Rothstein is right about returning 4 double-figure scorers from a team that had 21 wins. On paper they're far better.
Re: 2020-21 Season
But nobody has Tre Mitchell except us. I really believe after the way we ended the season last year, this team will surprise the league. Lots of balance, lots of talent, and good team chemistry. UMass time!

Bryant could be a sneaky tough game. They took Rutgers to the wire to start last season. Some talented guys on that roster.

Re: 2020-21 Season
Last year that may have been the case, but they lost a lot of guys. They had 2 players graduate and 5 transfer. Their leading scorer (Grant - 16.3) and leading rebounder (Harding - 8.8) are gone. Of the 9 players who averaged double figure minutes last year, only 4 remain and the tallest is 6'7. I do not know who they have coming in, but it will be hard to replace the people they lost so I'm calling this one by 15.Upstate10 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2020 2:11 pm https://twitter.com/jonrothstein/status ... 52481?s=21

^ And I saw earlier today that they have lost incoming frosh Tairi Ketner, son of Lari, who has re-classified and will go to Woodstock this coming year.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."
Re: 2020-21 Season
^ Rather interesting; hope he has a great year at WoodstocK and just maybe he considers coming to Amherst.
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.
