Game 22, 2019-20: at Davidson (2/1)
We travel to Davidson for an 8 PM game on Saturday. CBSSN has the TV and stream.
Davidson was in DC last night and they went 3 halves (4 OTs) with GW. Colonials ended up prevailing, 107-104.
Hopefully they don't get their full legs back, but there's almost 72 hours between games. This won't be easy for us.

This is a game you have to win if you don't want to play on day one.

They are 10-10 overall and 4-4 in conference. Would be nice to pick this one off, but we know how our road record has been.

I’m not very familiar with Davidson outside JAG, Grady, and their shooter Mike Jones (I’m Mike Joooooones), but I don’t think they have anyone who can hang with Tre down low. I think this is a game where they can get an advantage on the offensive glass. Keep the momentum going!

It will be interesting to see if the newly found firepower will be effective on the road. Santos seems to be the real deal, jury still out on Walker. Also, nice to see MM change things up some.

I want to see us play hard for 40 minutes (or more if necessary). I don't think we have the defensive skill at this point to stop their big guns. But I want to see us play hard and not give up.

They have a big, Brajkovic (6'10, 250) who gets 10 points, 5.4 boards and around 1 block per game. After that, they don't have much size. It may be a matter of who gets whom in foul trouble.Worcester_To_Amherst wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2020 12:51 pm I’m not very familiar with Davidson outside JAG, Grady, and their shooter Mike Jones (I’m Mike Joooooones), but I don’t think they have anyone who can hang with Tre down low. If UMass plays smart, inspired basketball they'll win!

A win Saturday would put us in great shape for the day one bye, but a bigger game could be home vs GMU next week. Right now we need to show we can play well on the road, though, because after GMU our remaining games vs lower standing teams are road games. A win Saturday might even mean we can finish better than barely escaping day one.
Davidson might be like St. Joe's but with 2 guys comparable to Ryan Daly (Grady and Gudmundsson) and a pretty good big man. And a man most think is a great coach. And they're tough at home. In other words, they'll be very hard to beat.

Like to see Samba cover Grady. Samba is a strong, mobile kid who really digs in defensively. And his size I think could help limit Grady. Samba really becoming one of my favorites. Quietly gets his shit done and is posting some solid #'s

Re: Game 22, 2019-20: at Davidson (2/1)
I wouldn’t go that far. It’s a winnable game and would certainly go a long way towards us finishing 10th or better, but there are plenty of ways to get there without getting this one, especially since there are plenty of bad + awful teams between 9th and 14th this year. SJU and Fordham are two locks to play Wednesday, and then for the other two spots La Salle is 1-7, Mason is 2-6, and GW is 4-4 but about to go through a significantly tougher schedule than they have so far.
Anyway, Davidson has been up and down but they are still a better team than we are in a vacuum and then you add in the fact that we’re on the road (and we all know about our recent history on the road). All things considered, we will probably be 7 or 8 point ‘dogs. As I said, winnable, but certainly not a must win. Even if we don’t get this one, plenty other winnable games left. Only Dayton is essentially unbeatable.

A win would put UMass in 9th. McCall has to get this team winning some on the road. The time is now.

^^ I agree, Slap. I think the big upcoming game is the next home game against Mason. Aside from the fact that I hate those F'ers and the way they've beat us over the years, we'll be battling with them for that cut line to avoid the Wednesday game. Bring that level of intensity and competitiveness on the road against Davidson and URI and see if we can steal one, but the big one is Mason. The teams sandwiched around us are GW, who we won't play again so they own the tiebreaker, and George Mason. We need to beat GMU or else they win the season series and get the tiebreaker.
Re: Game 22, 2019-20: at Davidson (2/1)
It's a toss-up between who guards Grady and who guards JAG. They are both 6'5 but JAG is the better rebounder. It's Samba and Preston for those 2 and see how it goes.
I realize Davidson is 4-4 in conference, but a road win there would be as big as the Duq. win. The ESPN predictor has them as 13.5 point favorites with an 89.5% chance of winning. Vegas won't have this big a spread, probably around 8.

I will be thrilled but more than that, astounded, if we win on Saturday.
