Game 18, 2019-20: George Washington (1/18)
Game 18, 2019-20: George Washington (1/18)
Up next is a home game that UM sorely needs, and a winnable one versus GW. The Colonials got their first league win last night, over Mason, 73-67.

Armel Potter led GW with 26, including 12 from the stripe. He got us for 19 in our game last year, which was his 2nd most of the season.
GW put out their own column after last night's win, calling it Trust The Process

"Let's not worry about the results, man. Let's keep worrying about getting better and keep improving," was one of the quotes. Sounds familiar.
Anyway, GW was picked 12th in the A-14, just behind us. New coach Jamion Christian was at Mt. St. Mary's (NEC) for 6 years, had a one-year stint at Siena, then made a quick move for GW.
By the numbers, GW is led by Potter (6'1 182 RS-Sr G) and his 14.6 ppg and 5.7 apg. The points average is 9th in the league, assists 3rd. He does a 2.1 A:TO at the point, 6th in the league.
Jamison Battle (6'7 225 Fr F) adds 12.6 / 5.8
Jameer Nelson Jr (6'1 190 Fr G) spurned Saint Joe's and gives GW 9.9 / 3.4. Leads them in steals but also turnovers.
Maceo Jack (6'5 190 Jr G) does 9.8 / 2.4
Arnaldo Toro (6'8 248 Sr F) does 7.9 / 8.8 (leads team and would be 6th in the league, but his 12 games played misses the cutoff)
As a team, they're next-to-last in PPG, at 66.6, ahead of, you guessed it, Fordham. We rank 6th.
They're 10th in points allowed. We're 13th.
We both struggle on the glass: they're 12th and we're 13th in rebounding offense. They're a little better than us in keeping teams off the glass, so their -3.0 edges out our -5.2
In FG%, we're 7th, they're 11th. In defense, they're 11th, we're last.
From 3, we're 3rd, they're 8th. In defense, they're 2nd, we're 6th.
Turnover margin: we're a +0.88, they're a -1.24
GW is 7-10 overall but 0-4 in true road games.
Common opponents:
South Carolina - we lost at home by 4, they lost in SC by 9
Harvard - we got smoked there by 34, they lost at home by 13
Bona - we lost in Rochester by 13, they lost at home by 5
SLU - we lost there by 3 in OT, they lost there by 5 in regulation
We need to get this one to get some confidence back, especially before we head back on the road again.
4:30 Saturday at The Bill, on NBCSN. Chance of snow, but not too bad:
Snow likely, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 27. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Toro and Amir Harris (7.4 points, 5.8 rebounds) both missed their last game. I couldn't find any info as to why. Our job will be a lot easier if they don't play on Saturday.

Hopefully the drive home will be pleasant, weather-wise and win-wise.

Re: Game 18, 2019-20: George Washington (1/18)
Obviously game 5 of the season is never a “must-win,” but this is one of the ones that we really do have to win if we want to realize our dreams of getting out of the Wednesday game in Brooklyn. The La Salle game (check), this one, St. Joe’s and Mason at home are maybe the only games where we will be the betting favorites and then you hope to steal 2 or 3 of the others.
Regardless of all that though, we definitely won’t win if we come out soft and don’t rebound or hit the floor for loose balls. GW isn’t good but we definitely aren’t good enough to beat them playing at 80%. Go UMass and let’s get a momentum builder by winning by 10+.

Yep, in for the win here. Cannot lose to any of the bottom four, or you are one soon. An 8-10th place finish would be a small victory, all things considered.
Just looked: with teams 8 through 12 all at 1-3, this is a big one. Go get em guys!

^ Considering we were picked 11th in the pre-season, and that we lost Weeks, Buggs, Chatman, sign me up for finishing 8th-10th.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm not okay with continual mediocrity. I just want to see signs of progress. I, along with most rational fans, knew this was going to be a building-block season, not a block-buster season.

The fans, team and coaches need this win. Think the team will come thought tomorrow with a win. Hope it's a pretty win.
Go UMass!!

I feel like this is a game where Santos might really step up.

UMass are 5.5 point favorites - solid margin.

I hate GW. They ruined Marcus Camby jersey retirement day in 2013 and today is Alumni Day. We can't let them do it again.
Edit: By the way, they have beaten us 7 straight times.

We are going out to eat with my son, his partner and our granddaughter because they are flying back to Vegas tomorrow morning after being here for 10 days to celebrate my 83 birthday yesterday.
So I will record the game and watch it when we get back home. You guys going to the game yell a lot to root them on.

They should be offering reduced price tickets to this game. What good is a 9600 seat stadium with 1500 people in it?
