Game 6, 2019-20: vs Virginia (Mohegan Sun, 11/23)

Post by MikeUMA » Thu Nov 07, 2019 10:36 am

Starting this early to point out what UVA did in their season opener last night. First defending national champ to start on the road in over 50 years, but the story was their continued defensive mastery, locking down Syracuse with just 34 points allowed.

UVA's schedule until our game...
home vs James Madison, 11/10
home vs Columbia, 11/16
home vs Vermont, 11/19

They should breeze thru those, but they're also offensively challenged at times, so we'll see.

I plan to be at both Mohegan games. See you in the arena, or at the blackjack tables.

I'll be there for the game against UVA and the Sunday TBD game. Can't wait.

Looks like UVA will be a very challenging game. Very challenging.

I haven't seen VA play but I see that their games are pretty low scoring (very low for the opponents). For those that have seen them, do they play at a very slow pace or are they challenged offensively?

One think I know, they are HUGE! Their starting lineup is:
7'1
6'9
6'8
6'7
and a 5'9 PG to run the team.

Would MM play Djery and Tre together? Or are we better having a quicker team who can shoot from outside?

Slow pace with defensive dominance. Very different style of basketball than most DI teams out there.

To start the game, keep doing what you have been doing. Speed them up. Will only have 4 scholarship guards, so maybe bring the tightest pressure rotating Samba, Preston, and CJ. Would be nice to have Sy, but we will see. Will probably need some success with the 3 pointers to hang with them. Should be interesting.

Yeah, i think you have to run and press and try to wear them down. Lot of size to contend with on a slowdown game

Yes, I see it as a battle of will. Do not see UMass having much chance unless they can impose their style.

IIRC they were one of the best if not the best 3pt defenders in Div 1 last season.

^ Teams shot 29% from 3 last year against VA. Small sample size this year, but teams are 19/81. That's less than 25%. Syracuse was the worst, 5/29 but the other 2 teams were also well under 30%.

They are extraordinarily good at the pack-line defense and as a result they force a lot of late shot-clock 3 attempts. Quick, decisive and frequent ball movement will be paramount-if the ball starts to stick, you're screwed. When played well, this defense makes it very hard to get dribble penetration and also makes it tough to feed the post. It's gonna be a hell of a challenge.

Seems to me that the pack-line defense is another name for zone.

I'm not at the point of predicting an upset, but this team will show up and play hard. The Cavaliers are in for a game!

Virgina's early schedule hasn't been particularly difficult. Aside from their opening win at Syracuse, they've beaten a pair of mediocre opponents handily at home.

Tonight's match-up against Vermont ought to be interesting since the Catamounts are 4-0, with three of those wins coming in the road...including handing St. John's its first loss of the season in NY this past Saturday.

@JonRothstein
I'd rather swim with great white sharks than try and come up with an offensive game plan against Virginia.

Tonight, John Becker and Vermont take their turn in Charlottesville.

First to 30 wins.
