Mitchell listed by one of the panelist's "Newcomer of the Year" for all mid-majors.

Coach Bergeron was on Jay Burnham's "Plant The Flag" podcast... Talked for about 25-30 minutes about how he ended up at UMass starting with his graduation from Kings College. He has a very impressive resume and I can only speak for myself but I certainly planted a flag in my shorts listening to him talk about this year's squad. One sentence in particular: "Sy Chatman could be the best player on this team." I think we were all excited for him to make the physical leap from Freshman to Sophomore year - but hearing that he made that much of a leap got me all hot and bothered.

I also got a little more excited about Dibaji Walker. I think I might have been sleeping on him a bit too much. If he is eligible this year I think Marty Sage's 2-2.5 wins is right on. Can't wait for 11/5.

I listened to this this AM. Very interesting interview with Tony and he really had me excited to see what happens this season. Very intriguing nugget he dropped about future additions to the team as well.
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

Here's a link. You don't have to subscribe to ITunes, etc. Just scroll down to playlist and click on it. Bergeron starts at about 8 minutes.

Besides being high on Walker and Chatman, he put out a warning to the league; beware of Djery Baptiste. If those 3 are as good as he thinks they will be (and Walker can play) our front court will be a lot stronger than I imagined. I thought that Tre was the only major talent we had up front.

Haven't heard a lot about Samba. Hope he's full strength. He reminds me of Dana Dingle in how he rebounds and his quiet demeanor. He's a kid that to me could be explosive if the focus is on Tre and Sy.

I hadn’t been aware he was a great shooter. Tony referred to it as his “greatest strength,” and I was already impressed by his length, speed and bounce. If him, TJ, and Carl are all 37-42% three-point threats, man... let’s find ways to get them out there at the same time as much as possible with East (also a strong shooter) distributing. Who do you focus on if you’re the D?

Agree regarding Samba. Interesting to hear how good Bergeron thinks Chatman is.

Great interview. He has a very impressive resume and has won everywhere. I think a Umass coach has finally built a good staff. We now have a successful prep coach and a great x player. This is a very intriguing team with a ton of potential young talent. This is also a very big team, unlike we've seen.

A short video of practice. The one thing that caught my eye is how much stronger Sy looks. His arms, shoulders, etc. He drives to the basket early in the clip.

The Plant the Flag interview with Tony B is a great listen. Every UMass fan should check that out. I can't wait to see this new roster and what each guy brings. His statement that half of the freshman class will get "major minutes" is very interesting.

Also, quote of the year before the season has even started. How can this not get you absolutely fired the F up for UMass basketball:
I told our boss the other day, I said, you know, get ready to design some banners, because what we have coming in, we're gonna get to that tournament, there's no question

Optimistic for a strong finish. Hopefully, wins in A-10 tournament.

Good read, probably in print edition of Boston Globe tomorrow or Sunday ....
