Five first downs and 115 total yards on offense against a 1 - 3 team. CM 2, The Return, is now showing at UMass football games--tickets are cheap.

UNH had 19 first downs against this same defense... UNH had 17,132 at today's home game against Elon... Being in the FCS doesn't seem to be hurting their program as much as FBS is killing UMass.

UMass fans and the program are FXCKED!

Had a little hope for this team after win over Akron last week, but wow, we and Akron must stink. Wow. Blown out by a 1-3 team,

Oh yes, you raise some interesting issues but I’m rooting for our guys to succeed at this level until I take my last breath. I don’t think I’m alone in that perspective.
I think EconAlum is just a troll here to bust our balls. Most comments are nonsensical. I especially like the way we have over 42,000 applications for the freshman class and he says that would have happened anyway if we stayed 1AA.
Zoo Umass is not getting applications because of our athletics. If anything we are getting less because it has been so bad.

The flagship should still have sports but right now sports is not bringing much if anything to the table to draw applications. Either that or there are 42,000 sadomasochists out there looking for a dumpster fire to attach themselves to.

You’d be surprised. I work in a HS and many kids apply to schools because of the athletics, even if the teams are not good. I’ve heard kids say they want to go to a school that has D1 football. Without football there is no tailgate culture or band for example.

I agree, in general, UMass' bad athletics don't draw applicants. But similarly our bad athletics also do not detract from UMass applicants.

Well maybe a minuscule minority of people are attracted to FBS G5/A10 even as shitty as we are (I was for example), but that's probably a similar number of people who are entirely dissuaded from UMass due to our athletics.

If we had winning FB/BB programs with exposure that might change things. But currently our programs are so bad there is no exposure, no draw.

To the FCS people: even if we assume FCS was a viable option (a huge assumption)... what gives you any fucking indication we could be competitive at that level right now?

Sagarin rates us as the equivalent of a bottom 50 1-AA program right now. We suck but it has nothing to do with our strength of schedule (which is already pathetic).

I'm sorry but college athletics don't work this way. You can't just drop down when you suck and upgrade when you're good. I'd love for someone to make the argument to drop basketball down to the America East level because we've sucked in the A10. It's just as baseless an argument.

You are not getting less students applying because the sport teams at the flagship are irrelevant. You are not getting the Butler or Gonzaga or UMass 1993-1997 bump from having an amazing sports team.

Can someone get the applications number for the past 10 years to settle this debate?

This football program is a mess, as an offensives genius Bell should be embarrassed they could not muster a point. Not sure what is worse, Bell's offensive offense or The new Dewey's homerism in the HDG

Bell was OC at Florida State and did not call the plays, and Bamford didn’t read anything into that!

Bell was hired because he can recruit, is young, and inexpensive. End of story.

Only 2 pages... Probably because we're all waiting for the 45th of October for the game.

A kid died in training under the his boss at Maryland. It was after he left and that's nothing on Bell, but I don't think we want to look like that operation.
