No progress same junk year in and year out. Last winning season back in 2010. Hitting the 10 year mark in 2022. Really tired of the losing. Its getting to be much.
The excuses are getting tired. And so is the defense. You'll see about 9K at McGuirk next week and they'll tell you it's 16,725.

I've heard the biggest game to game improvement occurs between games 1 and 2. we shall see...
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

Might be difficult to tell given next week’s Opponent is an FCS team.

On another note, I like Bell’s demeanor on the sidelines. It won’t win games, but it’s a welcome change.

Typical UMass, up 21-7 and lose 21-48.

But for real, everyone has expected this for a while now.. that Randall West will be our starting QB?!

This was exactly what I expected. New group of young players, new coach, new system. As I said in the number of wins thread, we're going to get creamed at times this year, and I fully expected this to be one of those games; not so much because Rutgers is good (which they are not), but because there simply hasn't been enough time for us to get things in place yet for this group.

I still expect the team to get better, but sadly we're just going to have to watch them as they learn the hard way over the course of the year. It's going to be ugly more often than not, but I don't think the organization had any choice. I support the coaching change, I support Coach Bell, and I take where we are as step one in a long building process. Yeah, it's frustrating after many seasons of this, but we all know the reasons we are where we are now. So, I just accept it and look forward to better days.

What else are we supposed to think?

Actually not the same junk. We didnt see guys dropping every 3 plays. The whole team seemed much more in control. We ran the ball pretty well. Rutgers may not be great but they had some talent at the skilled positions plus on D. It's the same old D because Whip gave zero fucks about recruiting that side of the ball.. Bell will change that but it will take time.

I'll take the glass half full approach. This team is running totally new schemes with a real lack of talent left from the last regime. The loss of skill position players was extreme. Coach Bell signed some solid recruits in a very short period of time and the 2020 class to this point looks like the best UMass class ever. The defense could have folded in the 2nd half, but didn't.

My one serious disappointment was the collapse at the end of the first half. That's a continuation of past problems I was hoping could be cured.

On to Southern Illinois.

Things I liked — first quarter, running game, offensive line play, they didn’t quit, Coach Bell’s demeanor on the sidelines

Things on which I was neutral — play calling, West’s performance

Things I really disliked — Second quarter, defense, kickoff and punting game. What the hell happened to George? He used to be able to kick a mile.

Sticking with 3-4 wins, and number 1 should come next week. Only thing that will prevent them from getting there is if the defense doesn’t improve.

Love the new uniforms. Saw some good things on offense especially the O Line dominated at times and some of these new Freshman look great - Kevin Brown, OC Johnson, Cam Roberson and some good things on defense as well. Special teams punting was not good. George George needs to give us a better chance. Its a work in progress but I am very enthusiastic about the future for this group. Lots of things to work on and come out ready to win the home opener next weekend. Overall I thought the team gave a great effort and enthusiasm and at times they executed quite well. Just got to get better and come out putting it all together next weekend !! GO UMASS !!!

Are we really stuck with West at QB for the rest of the year? I know he’s a fan favorite, but shocked to see he was the starter.

He will improve, and he is most likely the best we have. Brito took a few more risks.

Not to go too negative too early, but I think every pass that Brito threw was a risk.

Looked to me like they are at a serious size disadvantage on the defensive side of the ball. Offense looked serviceable and I like the hurry-up/short-pass offense for this team. If the D-Line and linebackers don't get better it's going to be a REAL ugly season.

Exactly. Our 3 starting D linemen are 280, 290 and 260. They can't be expected to hold their own against 300+ O linemen from any Big 10 school. Speed on the D line is not a factor, size is. I looked at SIU's roster and even though they are FCS they are much bigger than we are. Maybe the talent difference will make up for it against SIU.

My biggest problem with the hurry-up offense is that it really hangs an undermanned defense out to dry when it doesn’t put together drives — which is what happened after the first quarter.

Whipple never learned this, or didn’t care — doesn’t really matter which. That’s the one thing that concerns me, at least until Bell and Co. start to build some depth on D.
I wrote this ... it's gotta be true.
