2019-20 season
Re: 2019-20 season
If the new game-plan is to create a program that focuses on player development, and if that focus includes recruiting players who will put the effort into getting better, and hiring coaches who can help the players get better... then I'm all for it. I believe that's the same sort of model that Villanova, Gonzaga, and St. Bonaventure use.

Northeastern has announced a November game at UMass. NCAA Tourney team last year.

Good addition to the schedule. Last year they were the top preseason pick in the state and I scoffed. By season's end I was scoffing no more. They ended up with an RPI of 51 and in the dance.

This is a very a difficult schedule for a team with 7 freshman but it will make us much better by A10 play.

Saw in this story on Wheeler that we will be visiting Fairfield next year - not sure that’s been posted here and it was news to me.

Some nice words for Wheeler from Curtis Cobb, who came to us from Fairfield.

that's a good find, pretty in-depth article. I would say from the photo that he could give Matt McCall some tips on how to dress.Jackson96 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 7:55 pm Saw in this story on Wheeler that we will be visiting Fairfield next year - not sure that’s been posted here and it was news to me.

I agree that it will be difficult. Maybe we fill in the rest if the OOC with a few "development " games like the UNH contest if last year. If memory serves, we blew them out and Diallo fouled out in like just over ten minutes. A game where freshman can be freshman and learn without losing.Marty Peretz wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 12:50 pm This is a very a difficult schedule for a team with 7 freshman but it will make us much better by A10 play.
I wouldn't mind visiting DCU to play HC this year either and, hopefully, get a road win.
Harvard, Lowell? Any word?

Walfish interviewed McCall regarding the transfer situation in college ball: https://www.gazettenet.com/UMass-coach- ... e-26209558
It sounds like he learned a lesson in getting all the transfers the last couple years and it's reflected in his current class:
It sounds like he learned a lesson in getting all the transfers the last couple years and it's reflected in his current class:
“I’ve got to be honest with you, I think it’s going to get worse,” McCall said. “We basically have one weekend to evaluate these guys with their AAU programs in July. A kid is going to play well one game and high major or mid-major-plus schools are going to take a kid and it’s not going to be the right fit. … The numbers are going to continue to grow and grow, and that’s why you’ve got to in recruiting evaluate the things that are important to you as a head coach and as a program and take kids that have a desire and a passion to be at that school.”

Let's remember one thing about the transfer situation, all coaches have to go through it, not just McCall. Why complain and have excuses, gain the players trust, be the best coach you can be, and I'm sure student-athletes will stay at UMass.
Re: 2019-20 season
^ Read the article, I wouldn't classify his comments as complaining, and he's certainly not making excuses for his struggles at UMass.

College basketball players graduating is quite a menial problem, compared to them flunking off team.

Re: 2019-20 season
What? That is not the point of the article. Quite the opposite, in fact McCall goes on to say that they are student athletes, "student first". The problem the article refers to is the grad-transfer rule, where a player can transfer without sitting out if he has graduated.
