Looking Ahead to the 2019-2020 Season
Re: Looking Ahead to the 2019-2020 Season
IceBus tweeted out their schedule. This means we have this so far:
UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.
Leave the A-10!

Re: Looking Ahead to the 2019-2020 Season
Anyone have any idea whether they are finished announcing recruits for next season? I hope not, as the two defensemen they added only gives them seven, and that number includes Vegara who hardly played last year. I would think they need to add two more blue liners.

From a Gazette article today, mostly about BB. I agree with 78 above and hope that Carvel has 1 or 2 grad transfer defensemen in his radar.78 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 12:49 pm Anyone have any idea whether they are finished announcing recruits for next season? MINUTEMEN COMPLETE SIGNING CLASS — Last week, UMass hockey coach Greg Carvel finished announcing his seven-player freshman class for next season.
The Minutemen will add five forwards and two defensemen to help mitigate the loss of three forwards and two defensemen from the roster that led UMass to the national title game a year ago.

^^
Really shocked that this is it for the recruiting class. Maybe Cornell transfer Ryan Bliss is going to be able to play on the blue line, but that would run counter to everything I have heard. There’s no way a team can go into a season with only 7 defensemen.

Northeastern has a much different definition of “schedule release” than I do. They released the opponents and months, but not days. UMass plays NU 3 times, twice on the road. At Matthews in October and one game at each campus in November.

And, the third defenseman has been added. Jaakko Haarti, 20-year-old from Finland.

From Jeff Cox:
UMass lands a nice commitment for the upcoming season in '99 LD Jaakko Haarti. Jr. A SM-liiga Defenseman of the Year and First Team All-Star with Blues U20. Good offensive, puck-moving, PP D with a heavy shot, according to one scout who has seen him play.

Expect BC to be much improved this year. Three of their commits, including a goalie, were taken in the first round tonight of the NHL draft.

BU had four first-round picks (and 12 picks overall) last year. BC also had 12 overall picks (one first-rounder -- Oliver Wahlstrom). Neither team finished .500, never mind make the NCAA tournament.
Talent is nice. But sometimes it's nice to have players who don't have one skate out the door before they even play a game for you.
I wrote this ... it's gotta be true.

Keeping both asst. coaches and Carvel is important. This is a good first step.

Hmmmm...we just added another goalie — 5’8” Alex Camarre out of Odessa in the NAHL. Interesting. So he replaces Arvanitis, who I’d leaving in hopes of finding more playing time.

Carvel’s latest email mentions “skills coach Ryan Bliss.” I assume this means his playing career is over?

From what I read, Bliss’ injury was bad enough that it would have been difficult to return to college hockey. I’m glad that UMass gave him an opportunity to train to work towards the goal to return to college hockey. I’m also glad to see he’s still involved with the program by helping other athletes.
