3 years in was the magic number for UMass Hockey. 3rd year for UMass coach MM, anything is possible! This has been a perfect offseason so far.

Bit of a stretch.....year 3 for hockey has a Soph who is probably the best player in the country and a handful of NHL draftees. Nothing close to that in Basketball

handful of NHL draftees? Would not consider two a handful...although I fully expect 3-4 to be drafted in this years draft...maybe even more.

The only thing similar to year three of McCall and year three of Carvel will be that it’s year three. Carvel started at ground zero with 5 wins the first year, more than tripled that number his second year, and has 30 wins this year. It has been a straight upward projection. Carvel also has two extremely talented assistants who have been with him from the beginning of his UMass tenure. I sure as hell hope this team will show progress next year, but given the fact that we could have as many as 8 new players and a new coaching staff, except for the head coach, I have no expectations. It appears a lot of talent will be coming in, but with all the turmoil, I just hope they improve every game this season, and are a competitive, solid team by the end of the year. Maybe more like year two of Carvel, or year 1 1/2.

^ I think next year is going to be surprisingly strong. Top half of A10 finish. A few players can make a huge impact in basketball and there is also a lot of addition by subtraction going on. Time will tell, I'm sure no one will be disappointed if I'm right.

I’ve learned my lesson and it’s only taken several years and a bunch of losses. Not going to have any expectations at all heading into next year and only hoping to see to the team compete consistently and get better as the season moves along.

^ I hear ya, I haven't learned my lesson at all, but a broken clock I'll need to be right at some point!

One thing I like about having the 3 Woodstock kids coming in is they are teammates, they already know how to play together and presume they really like each other or wouldn't end up going to the same school. Can't underestimate the positive effect of a locker room that has each others backs and really enjoys playing together. I think the dynamic and intensity should be very improved with kids that 100% want to be here and play for UMass and each other.

I don't think anyone is saying that Umass basketball will be in the final four next year similar to hockey. Probably just hoping for a big leap in year 3 similar to hockey. Not the same outcome.

With 7-8 freshmen on the roster, I’ll be shocked if we see a big leap. Hope I’m dead wrong.

I think this sums it up for me.. from NERR " A model of consistency all game long, Mitchell put his best foot forward in his match-up against Montverde CBD's Gonzaga bound big man Pavel Zakharov. Mitchell finished with 24 points and 7 rebounds while pulling the opposing big man away from the rim with his shooting range, scoring inside, and showing his trademark highly skilled attack."
He did that against the #41 player and #10 center in the country according to Rivals.

If Duke, NC and Kentucky to name a few that used a lot of freshmen and were very successful why can't we use several freshmen and win a lot more games than we did the past two years? I think that Duke used 4.

Especially if the freshman have been playing against top competition.

When we bring in the caliber of freshmen those schools bring in, I'll agree with this. We're not quuuiiittteeee on that level.
