Gotta do better than this
Re: Gotta do better than this
The school has always struggled with fundraising. Athletics or otherwise.

Didn't eldon say that he was gonna make a donation for losing the bet on the Providence game? Thought he said a 5 digit donation

Re: Gotta do better than this
The basic fan through the years like to bitch, complain and give their expert advise, but prefer to sit back and hope a financial wealthy donor will step up. This have been changing in recent times where the average fan donations have increased despite football and basketball mot doing well. The annual giving in April could be the big difference. Also of note several big donations have come in with Jacobson - football and Kennedy - basketball. There have been some medium gifts as well and recently noted Marcus Camby must have given one of those donations and there is a place named after him in the Kennedy Championship Center. Others as well as others in the Jacobson Performance Center.

Re: Gotta do better than this
Fundraising for the school, while still low for a major state university, has increased significantly in recent years. This can be attributed to the stronger academic profile of the university. The Commonwealth College and Isenberg business school, in particular, have attracted top flight students, have excellent placement, and are very difficult to gain admission to. This strength has had a profound effect on fundraising.
If major revenue producing sports like men's basketball can be a perennial NCAA tournament team and football can be a regular bowl team, athletics can achieve similar fundraising growth. In addition you can get sellouts in basketball and football. Without that type of (not unreasonable expectations) you will continue to see 2500 people at basketball games and 10000 (generously) at football games. It is the responsibility of those coaches McCall and Bell to get us to that point. If they are successful coaches, that is not an unrealistic expection.

Actually, fundraising is flat to down. See pp 38-39 inside this report. Endowment is similar, but UMA's overall financial cushion is very good. See the charts. Econ.

Curious to see the numbers over the last two years since they've started that fundraising blitz in June or whenever. That report is very interesting, but only goes to 2016 data.

https://umassathletics.com/news/2018/5/ ... paign.aspxAMHERST, Mass. – It was another record-breaking year for the University of Massachusetts Department of Athletics during the annual UMass Gives campaign on April 26-27. In the 48-hour span, a total of 1,573 gifts equaling $165,672.83 were made which are new records for both. The total number of gifts made also doubled the next highest unit on the UMass Amherst campus.
"I want to thank our most generous supporters, alumni, coaches, staff, and current student-athletes who took part in UMass Gives this year," said Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford. "Their generosity will directly impact the experiences of our students and their sport programs. To see the support, particularly from alumni giving back to their specific programs, was inspiring. We look forward to breaking new records during our 2019 UMass Gives campaign."
The $165,672 raised in 2017-18 was an increase of 42 percent compared to the 2016-17 challenge ($116,607). The gift total increased 58.4 percent compared to 2016-17 as well

Obvious or not, it's a fact.PreecherJenkins wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 8:24 amThis post is the winner of the most obvious comment of the year!!!! Its like saying Whipple did not win enough games to save his job or Holloway is overweight
Other facts are, 1) I've been a Football season ticket holder for 10 years and I wasn't notified of this fundraiser - not be email, or phone call or carrier pigeon. So, if I as a season ticket holder had no way to know that this was going on, how on earth do you expect the casual fan to know? And BTW, I just updated my contact information with the school not 2 months ago.
2) People invest in winners or, at least something that they will see a return on investment. In this example, that translates to wins on the field. There is nothing currently, other than highering a motivated unproven young coach, that wins are eminent, donations or not. There is little incentive for anyone beyond the group that follows this board or the 247 board to feel like they should donate. And last time I checked, with only 9 donations so far, that doesn't even come close to those following this board, silently lurking or actively posting. So until everyone here puts their money where their mouth is, there is no point in saying that we have to do better than this.
If we're being honest, the University needs to do better than this. It has set itself up for failure given past similar initiatives. Better to remain quiet than to prove to your new coach and apparently the world, that you have limited active support for the program.

Re: Gotta do better than this
Sth for 20 years and the combination of putting down a deposit and donating is a bit rough for us. We give as much as possible, but we are average people with kids about to embark on college careers, sinking us or them into debt. We also did not receive any notification about the fundraiser until it hit the web.UMass'96 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 14, 2018 8:45 pmObvious or not, it's a fact.PreecherJenkins wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 8:24 amThis post is the winner of the most obvious comment of the year!!!!
