I gave a crack at this not too long ago, and what I found was that minuteman patterns seem to always rely on symbols that are inherently tied to violence (musket, hatchet, etc). The hat is really the only other distinguishing feature I could find. But I do agree that a pattern would be absolutely awesome, especially if they incorporated it onto uniforms. I.e UNC's argyle pattern, Maryland's flag pattern, etc etc.
I don't see anything wrong with a musket or cannon, but there are some other symbols that might work. The two lanterns from the Revolutionary War. The pine tree from the flag of New England. The Morgan Horse: originated in West Springfield, bred at UMass, used in the Civil War, and the state horse of Massachusetts. Robert Frost also wrote about a Morgan when he lived in Amherst. http://www.bartleby.com/155/12.html

Maybe an 18th century pocket watch? ("at a minute's notice"). Or a quill pen.

IDK I'm just throwing stuff out here.

I think the Minuteman with the musket is fine just as it is.

Alright, is it me or does RPI use the same font as UMass? Lemme guess, they used Phoenix Design Works in the early 2000s too?

IMO the 2000s UMass logo and the Power U look more dated and amateur than the Cursive U logo that was deemed "dated" by the design group and was literally designed by an amateur (coach Cal). Pretty ironic.

90s cursive UMass Logo is iconic. The U next to the basketball with mass underneath is my favorite.

We have Adidas for another 10 years.

The partnership will also include an increased focus on retail products giving fans and supporters greater access than ever before to sideline apparel and replica uniforms.

I'll believe that quoted part when I see it.

It's crazy to me how red our "maroon" is nowadays. Looking at all the pictures from kids on their OV's to campus over the weekend and all I can see is our bright red "maroon"

I wish they would get on with formally changing our color rather than pretending we're still maroon. There seems to be no effort to actually maintain the maroon color.... and that's a problem that has gone back multiple administrations.

How hard can it be to hire a company to help us set a standard and then hold all vendors accountable?

^ It's not hard if anyone in charge cared about the color. It doesn't seem like that's been important for the last few years.

We (many of us) know that there is an official Pantene color code UMass maroon.

It's about time we had a Chancellor who represents the true UMass colors.

For those not old enough to have been around when JVL came on board, in addition to his attempt to turn us into less colorful wolves, how can one forget the campus wide banners put up in maroon and gold ... that was really bad...
as is allowing numerous variations of the color maroon; Variation of Normal...

If you don't like the variations, Refuse to Purchase...
eventually, "they" will get it.

I posted this years ago, but ... a reminder...
During one of many trips to Pittsburgh when older child was in grad school @ Carnegie Mellon, I spoke with the manager of their campus store re: their merchandise... They were required to sell somethinglike 80%+ of the clothing merchandise in official school colors...

We seem to have trouble offering as little as 10% in our colors...

I leave you with this rather LOL...
When I was on the AA Board (brief reference; definite not going back in that direction here), an alum was appointed to the Board as a protégé of another BOD member...for his marketing background.

During one of his first vocalizations at a BOD meeting, he seriously referred to our UM colors as Crimson and Cream...
<dead silence in the room>
...even I could not make this one up...

God Bless UMass!!!
and to all ... a Good Night...
The angle of incidence = the angle of reflection: REBOUND!

My biggest pet peeve with the athletics branding is when people refer to us as:

UMASS
Umass
University of UMass
UMass University

And of course: UMass Amherst

Colors are an issue, but it's probably more important that people get our name right.
