Like CSU, Rutgers decided a number of years ago it could gain a national reputation through athletic excellence by joining the most academically respectable of the Power Five athletic conferences, the Big Ten.

Oh schools can just declare membership in a conference? This is good news for the SteveMaz' of the world.

The poster child of fiscal insanity regarding college sports, however, is Eastern Michigan University (EMU). It is a member of the Mid American Conference, a group of athletic wannabes mostly located near powerhouse Big Ten schools.

Okay it's kinda true, but I sense bit of bias and some glasshouse stone throwing from an Ohio U professor educated at Northwestern and Illinois.
