2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
I'll preface by saying I'm not concerned about the last open scholarship.
Losing recruits to coaches like Marshall, Boheim, Howland, etc. isn't the end of the world, but the string of visible recruiting losses stings a bit.
I'm sure the staff is figuring some things out, & I'm curious what, if any, adjustments they'll make.

I think when you're recruiting kids against the bigger name programs it all comes down to recent success like Jackson said. Postseason play, being on TV, and high visibility all pull hard in recruiting. We have the facilities, academic support and strength, and it appears a good staff. A couple good years and we should see UMASS win more recruiting battles
I like this new class. Versatile, dynamic looking kids

Dear Floyd, thank you for your (not seldom heard) encouraging words. However, I am running out of years. Tiiiiiiiiiime is no longer on my side, no it ain't. It's now or never.
Thanks, in advance, if we win 20+ games and make the dance.

Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
I admit that I don’t know much about these potential recruits.
But I can’t help but wonder how many of these kids might look to transfer next year after riding the pine at higher profile schools their freshman year.

Roadman, although I've never met ya, I think when we make the dance in the next few years or get to the A10 championship game, your head should be one of those that the students hold up and wave around behind the basket. With a big smile on your face
LS, I hear ya. Everyone wants the big name, but better to go and get minutes under a coach that will push you to be your best. Some don't want to be pushed hard but like they say, nothing worth having is easy to get

I think we dance this year.

Don't know if it's been posted but Luis Rodriguez committed to Ole Miss on Friday after apparently receiving a lot of interest from UMass and Illinois

^ Yep, you're right. Louis is headed to Ole Miss! Too bad we missed out on him.

UMass stopped recruiting Luis Rodriguez a while ago.baseline47 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 03, 2018 12:28 pm ^ Yep, you're right. Louis is headed to Ole Miss! Too bad we missed out on him.
Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
Taking a quick look at VerbalCommits, I see roughly 20 grad transfers still available at 6'8" or taller. Some of them stunk at their previous school but some were OK. I don't know if we're looking at any of them, but there is some help out there for front court depth if we can land one of them.
Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
^ I think the focus is for 2019 and beyond in the front court. Although if they are unable to fill anything in that aspect there's little downside in using the last scholly on a Grad Transfer - and I think a big is still probably the thinnest position, followed by PG.
Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
Maybe I'm taking the pessimistic view, but what do we have if something happens to Holloway? We have KTM and two freshman (Chatman & Diallo) as the only players over 6'6. Even in the A10 that would be an issue even if the guards and wings play great. That's why I keep lobbying for another big, even if it's for 1 year.MJatUM wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 10:37 am ^ I think the focus is for 2019 and beyond in the front court. Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
^ I'm not at all sold on KTM, so if Holloway is out for any extended amount of time, that's going to be a problem. With that said, the A10 isn't a big man's league. There are surely some good forwards in the league, but I'm more concerned about slowing down guys like Kellan Grady and Otis Livingston than I am with having a big man to match up with guys like Cyril Langevine and Anthony Longpre. The rebounding and defense is more of a whole team thing that we need to get better at, but a single big man isn't going to make or break that.
Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
^ +1.
I think KTM can be a good not great 5 in the McCall offense. We just need him to run rim to rim and block shots. I think more so than maybe anyone on the team this is going to be a BIG year for him (I mean this in terms of finding out what we have, not that he is going to have a big year). I'm very interested to see what a summer of working out has done for him.
