Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades
Re: Massachusetts Athletics Branding
This may have already been mentioned on this board in the past, but sometime in the mid 80's there was discussion in the Collegian regarding changing the name from the Minutemen due to the connection to the similarly named nuclear weapon. I remember that one of the options was the Doves.

Re: Massachusetts Athletics Branding
And then there were the grey wolves.
Re: Massachusetts Athletics Branding
Positive. It was an on-going joke with my friends and me that lasted at least a semester. And that is way too lame to have made it up.
But then again, I was probably a little too familiar with what was going around at the time.
Re: Massachusetts Athletics Branding
Seriously? I thought u were joking. The Doves? I would have left school if that happened

Was there the possibility of changing our name again in 2003/2004 that I am unaware of?McKinney wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2018 11:04 amYeah that's for damn sure. I can't imagine having five athletics nicknames over our history.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2018 10:52 am1948 is when we became the University of Massachusetts (no Amherst!) and were Massachusetts State College immediately before that. We were the Aggies, Statesmen and then Redmen all before the Minutemen, which happened even more recently, 1972. Thankfully we avoided another change in 2003/4...McKinney wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2018 10:48 am
There's also quite a bit of Mass Aggie memorabilia on display at Old Chapel. Actually looking at some of that stuff made me realize how recent (relative to our 155 year history) we've been known as "UMass" (and all it's derivatives like UM, U of M, U. of Mass., Univ. of Mass.).
Should definitely check it out if you haven't already.

^^^^
They were debating changing the mascot name from the Minutemen to the Grey Wolves. I am from the class of '03, I think 95 percent of people on campus at that time were flabbergasted it was even being discussed. Thankfully it never happenned.

This is a bit like beating IV's dead horse, but the career of Mr. Grey Wolf, Ian McCaw, is a strange tale. He left us because he wanted to work at a Christian university. Read his Wiki biography if you are interested. He has recently been given yet another opportunity and appears on our upcoming football schedule.

"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."
Re: Massachusetts Athletics Branding
I wrote emails to the AD at the time BEGGING him not to make that stupid change. Minutemen is the absolute perfect mascot for Massachusetts' flagship university. To change that to Grey Wolves would have been horrific.
Re: Massachusetts Athletics Branding
I'm curious what others think, but I don't like that UMass athletics is an Adidas school. We were a Nike school under Cal when we were making perennial NCAA Tournament appearances. I'd like to see us go back. Anybody agree?
Re: Massachusetts Athletics Branding
I'm fine with Adidas; kind of old school.
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.
