Game # 11: BYU

Post by jpatsfan » Tue Nov 14, 2017 12:09 pm

Lets get the fun started. BYU is having a dreadful year and honestly, why can't UMass beat them. I say UMass wins 48-35 in a surprise victory of the season.

WOW! BYU are only 4 point favorites at home against UMass.

I must say, that's a lot of respect towards UMass coming from Vegas.

This is a winnable game for UMass. BYU has not put up a lot of points this year and they are weaker against the pass than the run. That theoretically plays into our strengths. I'm not predicting a win, but it wouldn't shock me if we were competitive into the 4th quarter. To win, we'd have to cut down on the penalties, play better on special teams, and come out to play in the 3rd quarter. If we can do those things and keep it close, we could pull off an upset.

X-Post from Fight Massachusetts board.
I gave flack to the OL performance, but I was just thinking about that comment about the turf problems they had at Fenway, could have been part of their worst performances this year. I think they'll do better in Provo, but of course the trenches have been a reoccurring issue all season. shrug

BYU's lack of depth at QB could be a big help, but I'll note that (at least by S&P+) BYU's main weapon has been their defense (#51) more so than their already weak offense (#123).

With that said, our offense has played competitively against similarly or higher ranked defenses (Temple #53, Ohio #36, Appalachian State #43, Mississippi State #15). And every offense our defense has encountered (other than Georgia Southern) has been higher ranked than BYU (prior to losing their 2nd string QB).

I'm looking forward to a good game, I think there's a reasonably good chance of a win.

Salt Lake City Tribune story: http://www.sltrib.com/sports/byu-cougar ... cerns-byu/

Says our offense is 35th in the country in terms of yards per game. Maybe Whipple doesn't need an offensive coordinator, just someone to prevent the 3-5 hair brained plays he calls per game.

He can draw up plays that get yards. It's all about how you GET those yards, for example: they're #104 in 3rd Down conversion. That just cements they're either gonna get a string of big plays or go 3 and out, or maybe 4 and out since they're #13 in 4th Down attempts. Whipple isn't bad at OC, I just think the head-shaking calls are the result of too much to do on his own.

We're also first in the country on draw plays called on 2nd down at 94%.

If we happen to pull off a win the haters will say that BYU sucks. I'm thinking it would be still be a pretty meaningful victory.

People complain if we win, people complain if we lose. People just like to complain.

A win is a win. Getting to five wins for the year would be huge. With the amount of starters we have coming back next year, I would have to believe we would begin to gain some amount of respect from the national sports media when it comes time for coverage next summer.

BYU does suck, but I think for the people left at this stage of the season who still care about the program, beating them would be meaningful. It could have really been meaningful if the team came out of the gate better prepared to play and won a couple of those first six games. Then I think the number of people who still care about the team at this point of the season would be considerably larger. But that ship sailed.

No doubt, though, BYU is going to bring it. It would be horrible for them to lose to us at home in this game. So we're going up against a team that means it, and a victory in this situation would be the best indication we have that the team is maybe turning a corner.

I'll be happy if we can keep it close while committing fewer than 13 penalties (particularly limiting the personal fouls), don't give up huge yardage on special teams, and don't try to juke our way to a win with a bunch of trick plays that backfire. Even if we lose but can improve on metrics like those, I'll have some sense that we're moving forward going into next season. We'll see what happens.
