Reading this board you'd think SBU is Duke and Schmidt is Coach K. Sorry, but SBU had lost to Canisius, Little Rock and UNCW. They are a decent team but UMass should win the game at home if UMass is a decent team.

The officiating was a shit show all around and Gresham should have been assessed a T but not ejected.

UMass teams try to get shots in the paint or from 3 because according to analytics those are the best shots to take.

UMass went with the press so much and sat Holloway in the 2nd half because they were down almost 20 points and time was running out, they needed to try and force the pace and get some steals and easy transition baskets.

4-5 Bona players collapsed on the ball whenever a UMass player posted up in the paint or drove to the basket. UMass has maybe 2 players who are legitimate threats to make 3's, so that strategy is going to work. I believe Bona fans often criticize Schmidt for setting up a defense that routinely allows for open 3's, note Bona allowing almost 40% 3pt shooting on the year... unfortunately that's been the best strategy against UMass for pretty much every DK team, this is one of the big reasons why Bona owns UMass.

I like Berger, but he can't be starting and playing minutes as long as Flowers, Gresham or Baldwin are available, he simply isn't providing anything offensively and defenses don't respect him.

Pipkins is so good defensively, but his offense is putrid right now. He can't make 3's and he can't seem to finish at the rim either.

As others have said, until UMass proves it can consistently hit outside shots they might as well go big and own the glass and make it really hard for opponents to score at the rim. Put Gresham and Flowers in the starting lineup and take out Berger and Pipkins.

Gresham won't be suspended, at least under the automatic suspension rule for fighting.

If he were to be suspended it would be by DK, which would surprise me.

They should and I don't think DK is an above average coach BUT:

1. We had a game on Wednesday in Atlanta right after the Christmas break, Bonnies had 8 days to prepare. They were prepared. You could see it in their D.
2. The huge size advantage we had was gone inside of 3 minutes in the 1st half when Hines went out with the ankle and Brison got tossed. It would have been a different game if we had all of our bigs.
3. With guards especially, experience matters. We have none with our starters, they have a lot with theirs and it showed. Plus Adams is 1st Team All A-10 and possible player of the year. Our guys aren't (yet!!)

Who's fault is number one playing a game in Atlanta on Wednesday with a 4p start time on Friday?

I heard UM officals were happy with the 4900 in attendance, so much for @unitingthemasses

This
Like I said in another thread, it would be nice if once they didn't shoot 40 freakin' free throws..

I looked at that also. They shot 38 free throws to our 28, but 10 of them were from 2:09 to the end of the game when we were really aggressive and almost taking intentional fouls. So it wasn't as bad as the numbers looked. A friend commented to me that after the fight the refs called the game much tighter. That was to our disadvantage in that SBU shoots free throws at a lot higher % than we do (as do most teams). We're better off in games where the refs let the guys play.

I agree with Niles (a rare time) in that Berger does not need to start. DK has to find a way to get more minutes for Baldwin/Gresham/Flowers. Having Berger start both halves is just taking away minutes from players who are more talented.

Also with regards to Pipkins - I know there is a lot of love for him on the board but he is a brickthrower. The fact that you have, in essense, two point guards starting (he and Deeky) neither of whom can shoot presents a problem for us.

We should take advantage of the fact we have bigger players with talent and give them the opportunity.

Looking back, the game was going just fine for UMass through most of the 1st half. Despite a lot of mistakes, the score was tied at 27 all after a Clark score with 5:53 left in the half. By the end of the 1st half UMass was down by 8 and then by the 13:08 mark in the 2nd half the score was 58-40. In that span of 13 minutes SBU outscored UMass 31-13, the other 27 minutes of the game UMass outscored SBU 64-58. As best I can tell that stretch was marked by a lot of missed shots and turnovers from UMass along with offensive rebounds from SBU.

Here are the details during that stretch:

7 SBU offensive rebounds (vs 4 for UMass)
6 UMass turnovers (vs 1 for SBU)
2-13 FG UMass (vs 10-24 FG SBU)

Kind of wishing we had Mobley instead of Lewis. St Bona is just a better team right now and Schmidt is a better coach those are obvious conclusions.

I would change our starting lineup to Holloway, Baldwin or Gresham (whom I would bench for one game and he should have been ejected for throwing that punch), Flowers, Clark, and Jarreau and then play a matchup zone on defense which would protect our marginal defenders (Holloway, Clark, and Flowers). Even though I like Pipkins his size and skill set are a mismatch for what needs to done to win (go big, slow it down, and play zone). This approach would work in the A10 but it obviously will not happen with DK at the helm. The game on weds is huge because if they lose, we could easily be looking at 0-5 heading into home game vs St joe.

Gresham didn't throw a punch or swing at anyone.

UMass should NOT slow it down, they need to maximize their transition opportunities.

Switching to a matchup zone mid-season is a terrible idea. The defense isn't the problem. They commit too many turnovers, don't rebound it well, shoot it poorly and commit too many fouls. They can try mixing in more of the 2-3 zone they use occasionally, but it hasn't been very effective and it opens up even more offensive rebounding opportunities for the opponent.

I was there, he threw one and was out of control (it doesn't matter that his fist was 2 feet away from hitting the other guy). yea I know you cant change your defensive strategy this late, but with the make up of our team a matchup zone would give other teams fits with our size and length. Holloway for one would be much better off playing zone to save his energy for the offensive end. He should be the focal pt on offense and should be 16-18 pt ave guy, especially in league play.
