Mariano transfer question
Mariano transfer question
Does anyone understand why/when a player transferring doesn't have to sit a year? My question is not about Nick, but rather in general.

Re: Mariano transfer question
That's odd. It's not like he's a grad transfer. You'd have to apply for hardship and the NCAA has been a lot more strict about that lately. At this point you basically need to prove you are transferring because a parent or sibling is dying and you have to be close to them. I have no idea what Mariano's situation is, but it would have to be pretty solid if the NCAA was going to give him a hardship waiver to play without sitting out a year.

Re: Mariano transfer question
Lacrosse is different than football and basketball. Unless the coach wants to be a dick, everyone is able to play right away (and I think it's getting a little out of hand). You have guys literally transferring for the spring semester when they realize after fall ball they won't start - Connor Cannizzaro going from Maryland to Denver last January was the latest example. I think Nicky Galasso went from UNC to Cuse mid-year too. There are plenty of less prominent examples - it would've been a real surprise if Mariano was forced to redshirt anywhere he went.
Re: Mariano transfer question
Well then why can't we get some of these guys that won't play at supposed upper level schools.. The knife should cut both ways.

The same reason we have more recruits from California than MIAA/ISL schools this season?MJatUM wrote:Well then why can't we get some of these guys that won't play at supposed upper level schools.. The knife should cut both ways.
Re: Mariano transfer question
Because we haven't been that good lately and nobody wants to come here??
Re: Mariano transfer question
BU has never been good (obviously), costs double what UMass does, and has some really good players from Mass going there.Kosty wrote:Because we haven't been that good lately and nobody wants to come here??
The charitable explanation is that out of state people have a better perception of UMass, and that won't be fixed. Up-transferring is an absurd recent thing that isn't only affecting us (Delaware lost their leading FR scorer to Denver, f.e.), and will only get worse the next few years due to kids committing early without a real connection to the school, unless/until the NCAA steps in and forces kids to sit out a year when transferring.
Re: Mariano transfer question
I never knew the transfer rule didn't apply to lacrosse. That's crazy.

How fitting that Mr. Mariano and friends were blasted today by Maryland in the quarters.
