Steve Buckley on "New England Sports Tonight" said today he was a '78 alum of UMass. He also said that as long as Bulger is prez he will donate no more.

Steve Buckley and Richard Gere have long been running #1 and #2 on my list of idiots who graduated from my school.

I would say that Gerry Callahan is a bigger jerk than both of those guys.

Buckley is a putz.
I don't think Richard Gere actually graduated from UMass.

Kosty - In some perverse way you have improved my morning:
"Richard won a gymnastics scholarship to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he majored in philosophy. He left college after 2 years to pursue acting, landing a lead role in the London production of the rock musical "Grease" in 1973."
fbiman - Callahan is missing from my life. I hardly ever see or hear him or read his stuff. We'll add him to the list on your fine recommnedation.
Now there's a summer thread: Biggest UMass Idiots In Public Life

Remember, the biggest UMass idiot in public life at the current time has two degrees from Boston College and none from UMass.

Rocks - While I strongly disagree with your view of Billy, I have to point out that he is what folks here in the Eastern Provinces (which, I must point out, you abandoned) call a "Triple Eagle": BC High, BC undergrad, BC Law.

Exactly, and we wonder why UMass is in such dire straits with an Eagle tot he third power at the helm.
I didn't abandon the Eastern Provinces, I just wanted to see how the barbarians lived out here in the hinterlands beyond 495. I'm merely here as part of an anthropological study.

Billy Bulger may be a lot of things, but the one thing he isn't is an "idiot". All jokes about his felon brother aside, you don't rise from the South Boston projects to the presidency of UMass by being an "idiot".

Yes, he has accomplished a lot in his lifetime. However, given that an idiot is a stupid OR foolish person, in my opinion he has made some foolish decisions.
I am just not happy with either his performance as UMass President nor the overwhelming negative press and attention that he has brought to the University.
Sorry for derailing this thread. If anyone wants to call me out about my remarks they can in one of the other Bulger threads existing.
(Anyone else find it ironic with all that is going on that someone named FBIman is defending Bulger?
)

On the Tonight Show last night Jay Leno held up what appeared to be an informational brochure from one of the satellite campuses (UMASS-Dartmouth, if I recall correctly) that had Massachusetts mispelled on the cover.

Unfortunately, Billy didn't just make the local news, it was on NPR nationwide, and he was identified as the UMass president...

Who was it that said when asked about a negative newspaper article, "I don't care what they say about me as long as they spell my name right." ?
They may not be great, but they won't be boring!
