The Way We Were
The Way We Were
OK. This is a rant. I am of the vintage of Old Cage and some others on here (sorry Berkman, you are a good guy but not a real umie.) I am appalled at the state of UMass athletics. I can remember being so proud of our football team- I think we lost about 6 games in the four years I was there. Vic Fusia must be spinning in his grave. And basketball. Christ, I used to eat in the dining commons with Dr. J. As somebody on here said, we caught lightning in a bottle with Calipari. But why should it have stopped there? Why have we endured 20 some years of disappointment? It's because nobody except the faithful on this board gives a shit. My son and my grandson went to UMass and they don't really care about the sports teams, or the school itself for that matter. Is NIL the answer? No. All that does is make it legal for boosters to give athletes bags of cash ( something schools like Alabama and Michigan have been doing for years.) UMass doesn't have bags of cash and never will. So, where does that leave us? I'll tell you where- out behind the student union with the statue of poor Metawampee, alone and forgotten. That is all. At ease men. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

My $.02…
I think hockey is the exception that proves the rule.
After that thrilling win…out come several players including Ufko, Musa and Hrabal to skate with fans…mostly kids…autographs, selfies, etc., Makar engaged in blue line to blue line races with my 10-year old grandson, who swears he was able to win the 2nd race, and others.
The student section was alive with energy and clearly proud of the team and UMass.
I was a basketball season ticket holder for 32 years, but hockey’s what has my attention now. I give Carvel and his staff credit for that.
There’s a real community feeling around hockey. I felt UMass pride that I haven’t felt since seeing MSG awash in maroon and white when TF’s team got to the NIT final in 2008.

We spent several years of "Another One Bites the Dust"
But more recently, too often we hear of "Another One Bites Our Butts"
