Collegian writers

Post by Juice Stand » Tue Jul 23, 2019 3:17 pm

Excellent discussion topic in the doldrums of the off season. Who are your all-time favorite Collegian writers, and where does Amin Touri stack up against your favorites? Sounds like it's time to start the all-time Daily Collegian starting 5, or Mt Rushmore, or whatever you want to call it.

Dave Scott, Wetzel, Reiss are my favorites.

I didn't know that Mike Reiss was an alum and wrote for the Collegian. What years was he at UMass? He's one of the very few at ESPN that still brings good sports coverage.

Mid 90's. He was roommates with a friend of mine.

I have no idea who might be the best, but I'll veer off a bit and make a recommendation as to who contributed the most to our society:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Trelease

https://archive.org/details/massachuse1 ... /page/n419 (an article by Jim is on top of page 421)

Jim and I were counsellors together in Van Meter. A lot of Collegian sports stuff had no byline. Jim was actually more active at WMUA than The Collegian. The story about the Wilt 100 point game tape mentioned in the Wiki page has been mentioned here before. Jim fell asleep and didn't know he had it.

And then we have Paul Theroux:

Cerainly more famous than Trelease: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Theroux

https://archive.org/details/massachuse1 ... /page/n423 (Paul's article is on page 424)

I challenge anyone to find a Collegian staff with two more impressive folks - at the same time - than these guys.
