Minuteman Band to perform halftime at Pats opener
Minuteman Band to perform halftime at Pats opener
This is the band's tenth all-time appearance, and first in 25 years.
In 1988, the band performed a show as a commercial for Pontiac.

While it seems a bit off kilter to me, it has been reported the Band will be marching in the parade promoting the MGM Grand casino opening in Springfield. Anyone know if they earn an appearance fee for this?

^ There is a detailed performance schedule for this fall on their home page. No mention of MGM or Springfield.

Curious why it would be off kilter...?

… Student band promoting a casino raised the question of appropriateness in my mind, but on second thought, since the state itself now promotes "gaming" (including casinos), I guess it's a nonissue.

For me, it's an opportunity for the band to perform in front of an audience that may not know about them and bring more recognition to the band and the school. Many of those in attendance will be from within 50 miles of Springfield and perhaps we get a few more fans out of it.

Appreciate the fair response. I realize there is a stigma regarding casinos, but I look at it the way 69 does, it's publicity for the school in a reasonable manor. With that said, we don't even know if they are partaking, so it is what it is at this point.

Yes they are performing in the Casino openg. Also anyone out there in UMASS land that might have 2 tickets available for the Patriots/Texans game I would be interested in buying them My daughter is one of the Baton Twirlers in the band.
Re: Minuteman Band to perform halftime at Pats opener
Doesn't bother me that they are participating. Any exposure is good exposure. Just a bit weird since somewhere around half of the band members can't walk into the casino. How much casino money is going to Massachusetts education? Maybe some relief with tuition or scholarship money?
Re: Minuteman Band to perform halftime at Pats opener
In my view The UMass Marching Band is an ambassador of excellence for the University and its flagship campus this exposure in Springfield and Foxboro is all good.
Re: Minuteman Band to perform halftime at Pats opener
I get the gambling thing but my guess is MGM will be hiring many students out of the business school to work there. Perhaps UMASS can tap MGM for a big donation. Developing good relationship with MA. companies is generally a good thing. Also, the band always makes UMASS look good.
Re: Minuteman Band to perform halftime at Pats opener
^ Not that it means anything for UMass, but MGM does already sponsor at least one FBS school: UNLV. Would be great to get them on-board.
