Games 23 & 24 (2018-2019) @Maine

Post by jjmc85 » Wed Dec 19, 2018 3:26 pm

Orono is the last place in Hockey East I haven’t been too. Just booked a hotel for these games cause it’s to the point where if I don’t do it now I probably never will. Any advice where to sit/what to do in Orono?

Also how’s parking? Close to the rink? Been to Bangor once and I think it took me 4 hours to get there. Orono is like 20 minutes further. Gonna try to sneak out early from work and leave around 2 from Boston on Friday. Any idea if it’s worth buying tickets for that night? If I miss a period it’s not the end of the world.

*Technically I’ve only seen UConn at Fritas or whatever the rink on campus is called but whatever. I count it.
UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.

Leave the A-10!

I know there's parking right near the arena, but I'm not actually sure how much of it there is. I only went to a game one time back when I was a student and up visiting some friends who were going there...so I wouldn't recommend anything I did on that trip.

As for seating, I sat on the bottom section near one of the nets and it wasn't that bad of a view. I seem to recall the whole thing being pretty easy to see around, and it's a pretty cool atmosphere overall. You should definitely enjoy those games.

Parking fills up fast. Had to drive around for a bit to find a spot last time I was there.

Bangor is one big strip mall. Plenty of chain and non chain places to eat, ask around.
Parking next to rink, but agree it fills fast.
From out here in the Amherst area 4.5-5 hours depending if you stop and grab a bite. From Boston may be less.
Go once to cross it off your list.
Don't go anymore than once

The Friday afternoon commuting traffic heading north out of Boston on either Route 1 or I-93 is as Charles Barkley would say "That's turrible." And, it's worse in ski season. It can take up to an hour to get to where 128 and I-95 (to Maine) split in Peabody. Give yourself plenty of time for that mess.

Bump. Bought tickets today in section CC for both nights. Hopefully traffic doesn’t suck Friday.

Good choice. The last time I went to Maine, the Black Bears were still selling out. I had no choice but to buy from the visitor ticket allotment under the student balcony. Spilled drinks and melted snow from their boots would drip on your head through the metal slats. You couldn’t see the scoreboard from those seats; you could barely see the other end of the ice. I had the luxury of sitting behind a metal pole, so I had to peek around the pole to see the game. But the baked potato bar at Alford was great.

This almost exactly describes my experience. Pole in the way, yummy potato bar, crappy view. Fun barn, fairly nice fans (and UMass won when I was there and this was when Maine was really good and UMA was not so much, as I recall it was a goalie steal.) Went once, won't likely go again.

Oh and is this where I can tell an off-color "Maine joke" one of the Maine fans taught me there?

"What does a Maine girl say after sex?"

"Get off me dad, you are crushing my smokes"

I feel dirty repeating it, but it came from them!

I won't be watching tonight. Going to a JAZZ concert at Davidson College about 20 min drive for me. I am sure that someone will be making posts and the final score.
