State of the Hockey Program
Re: State of the Hockey Program
You and I are usually on the same page on this stuff, but I disagree. The Gut is old, but not dumpy. And you could make the case that Burlington is more urban than Amherst. It's a great college town.

Burlington is easily as nice as Amherst IMO. Both are great, but I can see why kids would want to go to Burlington. Now, Lowell on the other hand...

Re: State of the Hockey Program
I would argue that given the facilities, the reputation of the schools, school location, etc. it is pretty much a draw in terms of UMass or Vermont. Dumpy was the wrong word, but the announcers on tonight's game were talking about how the school badly needs a new facility, doesn't have the weight room and other facilities required to compete with other schools.Rocks22 wrote:You and I are usually on the same page on this stuff, but I disagree. And what about Merrimack? And you can bet that UConn will be out-recruiting us in no time.Marshmont_63 wrote:Burlington is easily as nice as Amherst IMO. Both are great, but I can see why kids would want to go to Burlington. Now, Lowell on the other hand...

Yup. I think I share a lot of the sentiments of 78 when it comes to the hockey program. What a joke that Lowell and Merrimack have lapped us a couple of times.
Re: Re:
I don't give a damn about the men's track team. I'm sure they're all great and if you asked me if I hoped they win, I'd say "Yeah...Go UMass!" but I wouldn't really care. I wouldn't check to see if they won or even know they are playing. Not giving a damn is not the same thing as hating.Chris20 wrote:jjmc85 wrote: I'm asking for the AD to give a damn about the hockey team. So far, I have seen no evidence he does.
I'd say that indicates some level of disdain, since you seem so hung up on parsing words.
For context- I'm a football first, hockey second fan.
UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.
Leave the A-10!

Re: State of the Hockey Program
Continues on life support, but the patient is getting closer to death. 7-5 loss tonight to a Notre Dame team that has won once in its last 9 games and that is LAST in the country on power plays.
The good, we can score goals and guys like Vatrano are coming on.
The bad: 4-10 overall, 1-8 in Hockey East and 1-5 at home this year.
I know Mick isn't going to be fired, but the system he has put in place is ridiculous. Most games there is no defense being played and I have never seen a team worse at trying to clear the puck out of its own end. For most of the third period tonight, Notre Dame appeared to be on the power play, but the funny thing is there were no penalties called in the third. This is absolutely insane and the inability to play defense is astounding. I guess we have to give Mick one more year with "his guys," but by the end of this season, they won't have more than 1,500 people attending games. Not that big of a crowd tonight by the way.
Hey, but if you ask McCutch he will probably tell you that we are the worst team in the best college hockey league in the country. What a joke.

Hey, maybe if McCutch leaves, the new guy will take one look at the program and shitcan Mick and pour at least as much money to make it competitive with the Lowells, Merrimacks and Vermonts of the world.

Or maybe he will focus on a conference for football

Or maybe we can get someone who can focus on more than one sport at a time......Mass Grad wrote:Or maybe he will focus on a conference for football

Too much work. Let's hire a consultant to do that instead.
Re: State of the Hockey Program
The good news is after Friday night's loss, we are tied at 50th in Pairwise and there are actually 8 teams ranked behind us, including Maine. I don't understand the Maine thing since they beat us twice. We are also 50th in RPI with 9 teams behind us, and we are 52 in the KRACH rankings with 7 teams trailing us.
AIC, the team we beat 7-1, is dead last, or 59th in two of the ranking systems, and 58th in the third.

What worries me most about those rankings is we've put up this poor record against a strength of schedule in the mid 40s.

This guy has been following the program since forever. Good read: http://fearthetriangle.com/2014/12/06/r ... otre-dame/
