New user registrations
Re: New user registrations
Board veterans will notice that we have a new look & feel. Behind the scenes, there has been a big improvement in upgrading the code to the latest version.
The latest version includes a CAPTCHA process for new user registrations. This was something we sorely needed, with all the spammers who have been trying to register and make posts for their fake Viagra, knock off Rolexes, and assorted other shit. You've probably done a CAPTCHA to prove you're a human, on various websites like Ticketmaster.
With CAPTCHA enabled, I'm going to open the doors for new user registrations. They still require my "approval" before they can post, but I'll see over the next few days whether or not the CAPTCHA is indeed keeping the miscreants at bay. Sadly, that does not include UConn fans

Re: New user registrations
So apparently there are spammers who are willing / able to go through the CAPTCHA process. I caught one from the Ukraine and another from that general area, then a couple others who appeared so suspect that I didn't even bother looking them up.
We'll see how this goes over the next few days, but for now the doors remain open.
If anybody sees crap messages ending up on the board, or via PMs, please let me know and I'll deal with it.

Re: New user registrations
I've haven't been registered very long, but I love this site. A great place for all UMass fans. Thank you for all you have done to keep this website running smoothly and keeping the spammers off of the site! Truly appreciate all you do, Mike!

Re: New user registrations
We're locking the doors again. Since midnight Friday, I saw 17 new registrations come through. All 17 were highly suspect, for various reasons.
For anybody who wants to register as a new member, here's what you need to do:
For anybody who wants to register as a new member, here's what you need to do:
- E-mail me at webmaster at umasshoops dot com. (You can probably figure out how to put that into a real e-mail address.) You will be registered to the e-mail address you're sending from.
- Ask to be registered on the board.
- Tell me what user name you want.
- Finally, tell me why you want to post on the board. Tell me a little something about UMass, so I know you're for real. Fans of our opponents are also welcome to join.

I'll keep my eyes out for enhanced spammer countermeasures-
Re: New user registrations
OK, it's time for some new voices.
I've traditionally kept the doors locked, and manually let people in as they've asked, but I suck at staying current with those requests.
I've opened the doors, let's see what happens. If we see a new wave of Russians peddling fake merch, or porn sites, or whatever, I might lock 'em back up again, but let's give it a try.

Re: New user registrations
Why don't we see what kind of porn sites it is they are promoting then judge from there... ALso, if it is UMass fake merch it will probably be a better selection than their current licensed merch so bring on the Russians!!
Re: New user registrations
^ Yep, that's my fear.
Let's see how much of a problem the open door becomes.
