As we approach Bamford's 2-year Anniversary

Post by 78 » Sat Feb 18, 2017 8:42 pm

I would argue that the athletic program is in the worst shape since the mid-80's. Clearly McCutcheon left an even bigger pile of shit than anyone imagined, and obviously Bamford wasn't going to turn things around overnight, but the question is, how long will it take and is Bamford the right person. It appears he has made two good coaching moves in women's basketball and hockey, but positive results are probably several seasons down the road. Football should be better this year and the schedule is definitely easier, but we all know we have heard that song before. And, playing as an FBS independent really is not a long-term solution. Men's basketball is tremendously under performing, and just about everyone believes Kellogg has to go. If he is not canned at the end of this season, they will be able to play their home games at Boyden next year. Lacrosse looks to be headed for another down season and we are definitely not getting the recruits that used to come here. We also are missing out on just about all of the good players coming out of Mass. I would strongly argue that we need a coaching change there too. The other major women's sports: Softball seems to have become a mediocre program, field hockey continues to be the most successful program at the school, and women's lacrosse looks to have a good season this year again, despite opening 0-2. So again, how long should it take and does Bamford have what it takes to succeed? Just a quick look at the records this year for what I consider to be the major to mid-major men's and women's sports. It's not pretty.

Football -- 2-10
Hockey -- 5-25-2, 2-17-1 HE, ranked 58th in RPI out of 60 D1 teams
Men's Hoops -- 13-14, 3-11 A10, tied for last.
Men's Lax -- 0-2 start this year after a miserable 2016 season
Baseball -- 18-27 last year, 11-13 A10
Men's Soccer -- 7-9-3, 4-2-2 A10

Women's Hoops -- 9-18, 3-11 A10, 13th place
Field Hockey -- 14-8, 6-2 A10, A10 Champs, lost second round of NCAAs vs number 2 Maryland
Softball -- 2-2 start after a mediocre 2016
Women's Lax -- 0-2, Last year 20-2, A10 champs, lost in third round of NCAA's
Women's Soccer -- 3-11-3, 1-7-2 A10
Bamford has erased McCutcheon

Eternal optimist of Maroon glasses here. But there might be some reality that this isn't a bad thing re:Bamford. Really he won't be hampered with things such as "our <insert program here> is in the midst of a 10 year run of greatness and we need to be hands off. Bamford can hit the restart button on the whole athletic department, coaches, culture, and methods. Hopefully, he sees that writing on the wall and does exactly that. Might even be a tool to recruit new coaches. "I am a young AD and we are hitting the reset button on our whole athletic program, come build this from the bottom up... you and all the best young coaches in every sport!"

...please...
