It's no fun when...

Post by harbo » Tue Mar 15, 2016 11:20 pm

....it's not even St. Patrick's Day and all the winter sports are done.

So I got curious and looked back over the past decade to see which programs were pulling their weight.

I looked at twelve team sports that have their games decided by a win, loss or tie (in other words, no track and field, swimming, etc.). Those teams are a combined 1615-1535-88, a combined .512.

Your job is to match the team with the correct winning percentage (tied games were considered 1/2 win, 1/2 loss and all post-season games figure into the equation).

1) .687
2) .652
3) .603
4) .587
5) .577
6) .576
7) .492
8.) .442
9) .416
10) .415
11) .401
12) .331

The teams are: football, baseball, men's hoops, ice hockey, men's lacrosse, men's soccer, women's hoops, field hockey, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, softball, and women's tennis

Have at it. There's not much else to do these days.

So are these percentages for each team calculated by the results of the past 10 years or just last year? All I know is if you count a tie as 1/2 win and 1/2 loss, the men's hockey team had a winning percentage of .278 this past year

^ Men's lax must be considerably higher. Don't forget that we did 15-1 a few years ago.

1) .687 Women's lacrosse (134-116). It would be nice to get a better seeding in the NCAAs in the future, but the perception of the A-10 isn't helping.
2) .652 Softball (321-170-3). Unfortunately tailing off. Tough to get recruits to head north.
3) .603 Women's tennis (140-92). Don't know anything about them, other than they are apparently pretty good.
4) .587 Field Hockey (128-90). Get some longer hockey sticks and some slap shots and you might catch some more interest.
5) .577 Men's lacrosse (86-63). Perennial tournament possibilities, but recent disappointments in that category.
6) .576 Men's hoops (189-139). I think I've seen discussions of them elsewhere on this board.
7) .492 Women's soccer (81-84-23). Kinda disappeared off the national radar. Hope Brianna's concussion issues are behind her.
8.) .442 Football (53-67). Glad Whipple's back. Hoping something amazing happens and we land in a big-time conference. That would help all sports.
9) .416 Hockey (150-211) Big chance for Bamford to shine right off the bat. Huge attendance (aka $$$) gains can be realized in short order with a good product.
10) .415 Men's soccer (68-101-25) Wasn't there a fairly recent visit to the national finals?
11) .401 Baseball (184-275-1) With southern teams practicing in January, it's gotta be tough to recruit here.
12) .331 Women's hoops (99-200) Another chance for an immediate impact from Bamford. First goal is attendance in the four figures, future goal is a crooked number leading those four-digit attendances figures.

^Thanks for doing this. I jotted down my answers but didn't get a chance to post them. The biggest surprise for me was baseball. I had them at 7. I guess I was thinking too far back to the Berquist years. I also missed on Field Hockey. I had them at 1, with WLax, Softball and Tennis at 2-4. Fun exercise.

Stefanoni has huge shoes to fill in replacing Elaine Sortino. I hope she's up to it, but the results aren't promising so far.
