Game 1A: Georgia Southern

Post by dennisdent » Mon Oct 12, 2020 11:09 am

For now it looks like the team is dealing with Covid pretty well, so its on to long time nemesis Georgia Southern. All I want is improvement and the team to look like it is actually being coached for this shortened season. Glad to have UMass football back and know how it is important to the players to get back on the field. GO UMASS!

I don't mean to split hairs, but I think "rival" would be the better term. "Nemesis" implies that we usually lose to that team. I seem to remember attending a national championship game where UMass beat Georgia Southern.

New article on how the deal for the game happened. Turns out GS A.D. called Bamford.

Their student newspaper doesn't think much of our chances, predicting a 52-6 win for G.S.

I'll split the hair: Nemesis: a long-standing rival; an archenemy (Definitions from Oxford Languages). I have always felt that since the National Championship game, each GSU game has felt like playing against an archenemy because GSU still can't get over losing that game to a bunch of underdog Northerners. I'll post the definition to archenemy for you Dr. G--if you need to split more hairs.

Hopefully we score more than 6, but GSU is closer to "mid-season" form and we haven't played a down.

Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary adds to the definition of nemesis: "A formidable and usually victorious rival or opponent." But "archenemy" works fine for me, Dennis. My favorite memory following the '98 National Championship game: A very polite Georgia Southern fan saw me wearing a UMass hat and came over to congratulate me. Then he noted that GSU had a zillion turnovers and said the better team didn't win. Equally polite, I replied, "Well, I realize we Yankees aren't supposed to know much about football, but I think I know enough to know that part of being the better team is not turning the ball over." End of conversation.

That said, I don't expect much of a competitive game Saturday. To paraphrase R. Pitino, Marcel Shipp and Todd Bankhead are not walking through that door. But at least the guys are finally out there playing and I pray that everyone stays healthy.

I've got my VCR set for an extra hour in case Ga So can hang with us for multiple overtimes.

It's good to have something to root for again.

Same here, but have ESPN Plus for $49 a year and when combined with Hulu $4.99 and then the Disney bundle for $2.83 more. After you have a log on it will ask your cable provider, which for me is Spectrum. Yes it work as experimented with Middle Tennessee. But do it at least a day in advance. Also you can get ESPN Plus by the month but it comes out a bit more than the $49 yearly rate.

Perhaps too much detail. Just purchase ESPN Plus for a month to experiment. Then log in a day early to be sure you get the kinks out and works. Short money to try for a month $4.99.

Yes, harbo, very nice to have someone to root for. My expectation is like everyone else. Let's see some improvement in offense and defense but will do a blind prediction or 24 - 41.

Thrilled we are playing as it can only help this extreme young squad and staff.
Go UMass!!

Brito is NOT in the QB depth chart. For me, Fallon being listed first is kind of a surprise but the use of "or" says that it could be any of the three. Just keep GS guessing.
