We’re just jumping over 2020 already? Another shit year for a program that can not afford to keep being non competitive.

For the record, we were competitive for the prior 3 years to this past season. Beating BYU on the road and especially loved the 2OT win against App State, who won the Sun Belt that year and beat us in the FCS National Championship game in 2006.

Never mind playing many SEC teams tough.

Totally disagree with the Negative Nelly take on UMass football! UMass football was just there--competitive, watchable and respectful--with all the negatives you posted. The schedule is much easier and the team plays home in Amherst. Don't tell me that schools like SIU can blow UMass out at home because it has better facilities and weather then UMass.

With your defeatist attitude you would NEVER be my "friend." Telling me to root for BC--I put a curse on your family!
"Competitive, watchable and respectful" still only got Umass into that #100-#110 range in the rankings and a whopping 4 wins and little to no hope of repeating even that amount of success if Whip stayed.

This sucks for everyone but the foundation is still setting. We can all sit here and argue about the no huddle offense, and 35 open scholarship positions on the bench, and the questionable support from the administration forever. The bottom line is that a 6-6 season is still 2-3 years away at best.

Changing staff again is just pushing that out further and further. Bell gets 5 years and should be allowed all of them to see what a full cycle can bring here.

Out of curiosity, what difference does one more season make? It’s only the diehards left anyway.
UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.

The masses will be coming back in droves.. This is a lock boys n girls (if there are any on the site). Going 2-10 next year will be irrelevant.

Just a bigger and bigger hole to climb out of the longer we stink.

I’m going full maroon glasses here. We hare signing virtually all three star guys in positions in high need. These guys not only have the stars, they have FBS size. They are replacing some veterans who have chose to leave instead of compete with the new guys. Playing time for young guys will play huge dividends. I think we will see substantial growth and the on field performance should be better, too. Avoiding the bottom 25 and reducing our scoring defense to near 40 points would be measures of substantial growth IMO for 2020. If this happens, 2021 should be the turning point. Obviously this all rests on whether Bell and co can coach the kids coming in.

^ I hear ya, but man, hearing trying to reduce the scoring defense to 40/game still puts a ton of pressure on the offense to win games. How many teams in FBS give up 40+ on average?

I would think we would need to be around 28-30/game to even be a .500 team.
Most people don't care that we lose by fewer points than we did before, its all about wins right now

I have no confidence that Bell is even close to being a decent x and o coach. Hopefully that changes but I think there is a lot of delusion on here.

Sadly you are dead on here. The OT loss to Yale attendance was 2,212 on Dec 11th. Look at hockey attendance. People want to go to a game where there is confidence the team will win.

Unfortunately its what drives attendance and support so the faster we get there, the better

Agree. We couldn’t win with Whipple offense giving up 40 points a game. But, if average is 40 that means a couple of games should be near 30. I don’t know if we can even score 21 never mind 30, but it would be progress to get the defense to average 40 or fewer points let up per game.

Its going to take a lot of patience, even with a proven staff it would take a couple years to get personnel to develop. Better hope they got it right with Bell.

QB recruit Kyle Lindquist, 6" - 4" 215 lb is going to come in for the second semester so he will get the benefit of spring practice. This will give him a heads up for the starting QB job. With his height he will be able to see over the larger OL that are coming in in the fall. Hopefully a few might just come in for second semester and get the advantage of spring practice also.

I hope he surprises everyone and becomes a solid starting QB, but let’s remember all his other offers were D2...not even FCS, and he’s rated a 2 star by 24/7.
