Fire this guy before it gets worse. I don’t care about his recruiting. You can’t score offensive points in one half of football when you play 4 games. This could be the worst college team of all time.
Forty years of watching UMass football and this and last season our the worst, by far that I have ever seen! Not even competitive at all after Whip showed that it could be done. Ten points on offense in four games.
Not just the worst Umass football team of all time, this could be the worst college football team of all time. It’s a shame they couldn’t play an entire season to see how bad it could really get.
Bell’s offense could have put up more points if they just ran a Hail Mary every play and hoped for a lucky catch or PI call. The slow developing run plays and play action just don’t work. The play calling sucks, the execution is worse. This is pop Warner type of coaching.

Totally agree! FCS North Alabama (no wins this season) was more competitive against LU this season then UMass was today. The play designs are also terrible. At least Whip could develop good plays to fit the talent on the field. This team would not have won a game this season if it had been fully played.

Our FCS teams from 96 to 2010 would destroy this year’s team. So depressing

Dennis I understand the sentiment - but this thread should be removed.
This thread is beyond needed. See my UMass 247 posts after we lost to SIU last year.

He won't be fired this year (unfortunately) but IF we start next season 0-8, AND lose to URI, THEN he must be fired after the URI game.

You didn't answer my question: Where is he recruiting better??? His coaching sucks.
You evidently have access to the Internet go look at our classes on 247. Not hard to do
Just think for a moment: 1-11 last year (the worst team in college football history), 0-4 this year (only competitive game was FAU and the defense played their hearts out). We suck as much this year as last. Funny how 40 points seems to be our usual deficit. BEING AN FBS HC IS BEYOND WALT BELL. It is "above his paygrade" and IQ. Face it, we fucked up again with another HC hire.

Totally irrelevant & moronic discussion since Bell is not going to be fired.

So Jack, tell us how you really feel.
So he has tenure at the University, I think that is a first for a football coach. Didn't know he has lifetime contract Jack, now I'm really pissed.

Good Morning DD - Coach Bell has a 5 yr contract and he won't be fired after 2 seasons one of which was a freaking pandemic season simply bc the team hasn't played up to your standards. That would be insane on multiple levels. He's doing a complete overhaul of the program with probably 55+ Fr/RSF/Soph/RSSoph. Therefore this entire thread is completely irrelevant and moronic.

Molnar's buyout was paid for by donors. So someone or a group of someones will need to pool $1.5M to buyout Bell.
It's hard to believe the media and general public would see that kind of expenditure in a positive light. The rest of the athletic department, university, and state are struggling in this pandemic and the financial aftermath that follows. The coaching search and securing a competitive compensation package from a budget-strained admin would be no small tasks at this point either.
As bad as UMass football is, it's been 2* years and I just don't think it's that high on anyone's priorities. Nor is it necessarily the best option even if the buyout was fully funded. (coach turnover leads to higher player turnover... and UMass is already deeply short on scholarship players)

Yes, McCutcheon said that it would be paid by outside sources but why was CM paid off by state funds in the end?
Right here it shows he was paid off from the state:
http://a.massterlist.com/article/2015/0 ... te-payroll
Do I realistically think he will be fired this off-season--of course not. Bamford isn't McCutcheon and Bell isn't CM. He isn't ready for this job and it shows. After next season and the team is as bad as it has been, there will be reason to fire him early.

What did Bell do as OC for 5 years and 3 different schools to become an offensive guru? His best offensive performance was the 2015 Arkansas St team. Maryland didn’t do much his two years there and the one year at FSU was a disaster to say the least. He had Power 5 recruits to work with at Maryland and FSU.
