So predictable, ok start then meltdowns. The coach came in late, but recruiting to a dumpster fire will not be easy.

Some would say that losing to SIU was costly, but according to this MassLive breakdown of game finances, it only cost us $25,000. What a bargain!

Sept. 7: Southern Illinois at UMass - The Salukis an FCS opponent $25,000. The fee is so small because UMass and Liberty swapped FCS opponents this season to alleviate schedule conflicts. SIU was supposed to play Liberty, while the Minutemen played Maine. UMass is still giving the Black Bears $300,000 as part of the agreement.

I see no future for football at Umass. Use to love following them but not anymore.

Attended a game today for the first time in 2-3 years, what an embarrassment. I was never for moving up, I went to every home game and loved CAA/1AA football but the move has killed my passion for this program. We had better teams and better crowds before the move. The only positive of moving up is the hoop team gets some good games out of it. Move back to 1AA (if that's even possible) or cut this miserable program.
Hire Matt McCall!

Echos how I feel. Felt we waited to long to move up. Should have moved up after the 98 season.

Felt disappoint like others, but need to give all coaches 3-4 years to recruit and to show some positive results, whether it's McCall or Bell. We all know we lost some really good players last year and the recruiting front the last few years was not great. Think will be reliving the pain for more games this year, but keep finding a new pair of maroon glasses every time they come off and get smashed. Cheers to hope and will not quit, enjoy football game day too much. Do remember we were heading south fast after Brown left, so do not things would be any better if we stayed in the CAA. Agreed we needed to go FBS around 1998 and with the third coach in 7 years, shiiiit. It's just painful but hold on, there they are, a new pair of maroon glasses.

In no way do I want the football program dropped. I have no problem going back to the CAA. Of course they would kill this UMass team and the program would need 4 - 5 years to be successful in the CAA

A lot of FCS (Maine/URI for example) are playing two games now against FBS teams and they can make enough money and still have winning programs.

Dreadful...and the worst thing is seeing excuses after your alleged big boy football team got its doors blown off, at home, by a mediocre to bad FCS team that went 2-10 last year. This UMass team would win 4 games at most against an all FCS schedule. Kind of feel bad for the guys who were going to transfer, but decided to stay. At least I got to spend $12 for a beer in the new Minutemen “club.” The good news is Bamford responded to my tweet about $12 for a Jess and said he’d get it corrected. Of course, there’s no way the price should have been that high in the first place. FYI, a Bud Light was $8.

Abysmal performance. Coach Bell's hurry up spread offense doesn't work w/this group. He doesn't have a QB that can run the offense. The Defense is beyond bad - they couldn't stop a mediocre at best SIU offense. Terrible performance. Hopefully they improve dramatically.

I totally agree about that spread offense. I knew the minute I heard Coach Bell say that he would implement that system that we were going to be in for a really rough transition, and it's even rougher than I'd imagined. Molnaresque. I just don't understand why coaches can't evaluate what talent they have and scheme better for their players, rather than force a system on guys who clearly, obviously can't handle it. Sure, recruit for the spread, move toward that eventually, but doing it now just seems to make a bad situation worse. Also agree about the defense, but I can sort of live with that because we just don't have the troops.

In terms of improvement, I think it will get worse before it gets better. There's probably learning going on, and eventually pieces will start to fall in place. But that will take time. It's going to be a painful process and better teams will feast on us. I think we're looking at a long, slow, painful rebuild. I'm not throwing in the towel, I think Bell badly wants to succeed and has the capacity to turn things around, and I'm going to continue supporting the program. But it's a mess right now, and my expectations for improvement are on a much longer horizon after today.

was out all day and recorded the game. Wow. we all knew the D would be weak this season, but I didn't expect this overall clown show- on offence, horrible penalties abound and little real talent was displayed....on defense we missed tons of tackles and the coverage was at times sieve like. The learning curve ahead is very steep... I hope Bell can keep it together until some help arrives next season.
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

National Champs 2034!

Settle down everybody.. sure we totally blow right now and we were going to blow this year no matter the coach is. I would have hired a defensive head coach, but am going to give Bell at least two years (and next year he just needs to show substantial improvement) before I start hammering him.

Drop football, drop a dome over McGuirk and use it for hoops/hockey...the seating capacity, large for those sports, would make a it a great venue for NCAA tournaments! 8)
