I know what you are saying, I just don’t really care about bowls all too much. Maybe that’s just me. In my limited knowledge, I think they are a bit of a scam. And the watered down version of the current landscape where every bowl is named after a sponsor doesn’t really help things.

If other folks think differently and get psyched about a trip to the LoanDepot.com Bowl, well that’s great.

One of my friends who lives in Akron says that traffic and parking for the Preparation H Bowl can be a real pain in the butt.

Well Jackson96, you are in the minority. Love UMass but believe in football more than basketball as most Americans on the streets do in my home town. A while back did a topic on the hoop forum, "Benefits of the A10".

What UMass fans care about more than a conference is winning. With both Football and Basketball programs not winning shows football is more popular than basketball. We know when the football or basketball teams are at the top of their conferences, we sellout both venues. It's more about winning and to your dismay, football currently is more popular. Get you don't care much about bowl games as the general public does not care about the NIT.

Here is a snippet:
Current attendance in both sports Football and Basketball shown the UMasss die-hart and casual fan cares more about football. We were in the NCAA in 2014 so basketball has been bad for 4 years or less and attendance was 47,737 and average 2652 or 27.9% capacity. Football has been bad for 10 years and we had 62,312 attendance and average 10,385 or 61.1 percent of capacity.
Go UMass!!

Why is to my dismay? I would be psyched if UMass football sold out every game regardless of what basketball does. I might be a bigger hoops fan than football but I am still a UMass fan - I do want all of our teams to do well both in performance and attendance. I think it’s great that there are folks who follow football more than basketball. Why would I be broken up about football having more fans?

And if I am in the minority well that’s fine too.

What an odd post.

Dude you predict EVERYTHING.... getting one right out of 100 is a pretty lousy batting average. There is absolutely NO CHANGE of Umass in the BE. In fact UConn going there reduced the odds of any Umass chance - it did not improve it.

UCONN's move really makes you think- it this good or bad news for UMASS? Good because UMASS may get a chance to join the AAC. Or bad because UCONN doesn't see the AAC as beneficial for their sports programs even though it has won multiple national championships in men's and women's bball and the football team played in a BCS game-Fiesta Bowl (when the BE had football). If UCONN does not see the AAC as good for their sports program, why should UMASS see it as good (though almost anything is better than where UMASS football is now)? Hope McCall and Bell have some success in the future years (little hope for next year) so conferences may take a serious look at UMASS.

I don't think anyone at UMASS realized how difficult FBS football can be. Recruiting, stadium, contracts...money, money, money. Even hugely successful programs can go down the tubes quickly- see Texas, FSU, Miami football. And these schools are in fertile recruiting states and money is not a problem.

UCon athletics is currently running a $41M deficit not b/c of the AAC but b/c of poor athletic administration. The move to the BE is desperation for Ucon to try to salvage their plummeting mens BB program. They are desperate and are willing to risk football to save their basketball program. I would not read too much into it other than that and I certainly would not be looking to emulate Ucon in any way shape or form.

Steve81, your logic is seriously flawed here, and although I hate to continue a discussion from another forum, I will here because you brought it up. You quoted your attendance thoughts from the basketball forum, which I challenged and you never responded. I will copy that here because I still believe that the attendance numbers don't come close to presenting an accurate picture.
Juice Stand wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2019 4:39 pm I don't want to get into the rest, but I just wanted to address the attendance numbers above. Comparing attendance figures, and % capacity isn't really a fair comparison here. Football only played 12 games, 5 in Amherst and 1 in Foxboro, and all of them occurred on Saturdays, so you have fewer opportunities to see the team play, and they're all on weekends. Basketball played 32 games, 18 in Amherst, and many of those were on weekdays and in winter weather, so they can be more difficult to get to.

Also in terms of % capacity, McGuirk is undersized as a D-1 football stadium, so getting to a higher % capacity should be easier, whereas the Mullins center is a medium or maybe slightly above average sized basketball arena for D-1 so it's harder to get a high % capacity. There's a reason NBA venues are only around 1/4 capacity or so compared to football stadiums, because the opportunity to see the team play is smaller, so you're able to scale the football venue up. (TD Garden has 28% basketball capacity compared to Gillette for football).

edited to add that I acknowledge basketball attendance this year was awful, certainly not denying that part of your post.

First off, saturday's news was awesome!!!! (I had my 40th high school reunion then went to Encore casino Sunday at 10AM). UConn leaving the AAC was predictable but here's another prediction: good chance they drop down to FCS or drop completely. They don't even have an on-campus stadium. Connecticut's economy is a basketcase. Many big businesses like Fortune 50 are leaving the state and now with Wynn Encore, the end is near for Foxwoods (and a little bit Mohegans). Connecticut will get killed with the decrease in tax revenue. So glad Blumenthal sued BC back in the day, then BC blackballed them in the ACC.

Just a little bit of CT is Westport and New Caanan, etc. Most of CT is the hood. Good Luck UConn football!!! You're going to need it!!!!

You’re looking at two programs going in different directions that may happen to involve a common step, AAC. UConn screwed the pooch y caving and building a stadium in Hartford. UMass has made the move incrementally with a focus on games on campus. I don’t think we’ve emulated UConn, have used their missteps to help us. The big screw up we had was CM. We have put that in the past.

Thanks McKinney. Juice Stand that was kind of anticipating of a response. Mind you there are 6 football games and 18 basketball games. Anticipated response - The stadium is bigger, hence also posting percent full. Hate the percent full stuff as see it used frequently on the A10 board by all the teams with gyms under 5k.
Go UMass!!

Not sure when these quotes are from, but in the linked article dated today, the AD discusses our time as an indy and what it takes. Also the Navy coach questions the attributes of possible replacement schools
