Assistant Coaching Staff

Post by InnervisionsUMASS » Tue Dec 04, 2018 8:36 am

Good place to discuss who Coach Bell brings on.

Any initial thoughts on who he might retain? Walker would be one I'd like to keep here. Since Whipple is "consulting" for a few months, it should be interesting to see how the transition goes.

For an offensive coordinator, thoughts on Sean Gleeson from Princeton?

No idea if their philosophies are a good match, but Princeton runs a very disciplined and productive offense. Plus Gleeson has recruiting experience in the northeast and midwest.

It won't be Liam Coen..... Liam has apparently been hired by BC as their OC, per CBS Sports.

Don't be surprised if Bell is the OC as well as HC.

While I don't like it... IF they go out and pay a high number to a DC I can try to live with it. It has been proven out you can't win on the cheap.

Walt Bell wrote: Will I call plays on offense? Again, that's gonna have a lot to do with who our staff is. I would prefer not to, to be honest with you. I believe it's really important to make sure that you dedicate all of your time to everybody in the organization. Not one specific side of the ball. But here's what I can tell you: when I say I prefer not to if you see me out there calling plays, it's not a problem. There's plenty of coaches that win a lot of football games that call plays on their respective side of the ball. So to me, that's kind of ancillary to the winning and losing. There's a million ways to win.

Judging by wife's reaction to the early members of the new coaching staff, they could raise some serious dough if they decide to do a "Men of UMass Football" calendar.

Paschall has a lot of responsibility -- assistant head coach, wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator!

^ I guess that means we can cross Walker off the list of coaches being retained. Unless he takes a demotion from STC.

Maybe I missed it but I haven't seen anything that specified his role, other than assistant coach. I did see a post somewhere that implied that there would be no holdovers from the current staff. However, that did NOT come from UMass.

Appears Jon Bills and Fredi Knighten are on Walt Bell's staff at UMASS, per Twitter pages. @FootballScoop
Anyone have any info on these two?

I remember Knighten when he was the QB at Arkansas State, which would have been when Bell was there. He was assistant QBs coach at FSU this past season.

Bills also was on FSU's staff as an offensive analyst.
